In this experimental episode, I am joined by Jason Herzberger, host of the Small Moves Podcast. We had a great job discussing the corporate world in comparison to the small business life. The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss came up a few times which is a must read for finding the work that suits you.

• It is ridiculous to wait to enjoy life until we are retiring after 65 or later

for many reasons.

• Many people are not able to enjoy the finer things in life once they

reach that health due to health reasons.

• That is way too long to wait to begin enjoying life. I want to enjoy the

journey until we get here. Life is now.

• We discuss the challenge of the corporate micromanaged

environment vs. a standalone company without all the extra

business/red tape to take up lots of time.

• For high level managers: When you are presented with an urgent

decision which should be made by someone else (and probably is not

as urgent as it was presented to you) , purposely ignore it for 24

hours. Usually they will figure it out without you and the urgency is

over. –Tim Ferriss in The Four Hour Workweek

• Don’t offer yourself up as the sacrificial lamb and the problems will work

themselves out. – Tim Ferriss

• For managers: Allow your team to do what they were hired to do and

don’t do it for them.

• In some corporate cultures as long as you keep your head down and out

of the way, your are ok. However, once you stick out, problems can

occur. As opposed to a startup where your mistake can affect the end

users directly and you are really involved in the process of solving the

problem the company was created to solve.

• The regular corporate jobs are great for many many people even if they

can grow to higher level on their own. This is the category where

most employees will fall. They’d prefer to know that their check

comes every 2 weeks and their insurance and health benefits will be

there regardless of how the company is doing. Additionally, they want

to be able to leave the office at 5 and not have to think about it until

they come back.

◦ There is no right and wrong here, it’s a matter of preference and

where you are in life and what you want out of it. So go and

think about what it is that you really want out of your life and

see what’s best for you.

Jason Asks

• Jason asks: What is a recent purchase that you made under $100 that

made a significant impact on my life?

• My answer: Kevin Kruse’s book 15 Secrets Successful People Know

About Time Management. This really helped get back my job at one

point and has really changed the way I deal with time.

Action Item

• Journaling – If it’s a life worth living, then it’s a life worth recording. Write

3 pages every morning in your journal just do a brain dump and you

will surprised how this helps organize your thoughts.

• Keep a notebook with you at all times.
