SHOW SCRIPT

Ahoy mates and welcome to LoveLane Radio, where we celebrate life with love and joy. I’m your host, Linda Davison. In our Smooth Sailing Episode we featured relaxing and romantic sailing songs, and in this show we’ll present lighthearted boating tunes that are favorites for dancing and sailor sing-alongs. I’d like to dedicate this show to Karen, Jay, James and Danielle, and thank them for happy memories aboard their boat in Dana Point Harbor.

Let’s set sail with John Denver’s salute to explorer Jacques Cousteau and his beloved ship, the Calypso.

SONG 1 Calypso John Denver

The crew of the Calypso traveled the world’s oceans for years and their wives and sweethearts anxiously awaited their return from each voyage. Here’s Looking Glass with “Brandy.”

SONG 2 Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) Looking Glass

Our next song was featured in the movie “Anchorman” with Will Ferrell as San Diego newscaster Ron Burgundy. All aboard!

SONG 3 Ride Captain Ride Blues Image

Now it’s time for some vintage sing-along tunes from Johnny Rivers, Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra and Harry Belafonte.

SONG 4 Sea Cruise Johnny Rivers

SONG 5 Mack the Knife Bobby Darin

SONG 6 Beyond the Sea Bobby Darin

SONG 7 The Summer Wind Frank Sinatra

SONG 8 Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) Harry Belafonte

Some of the songs in this program are also featured in our Smooth Sailing show….I hope you don’t mind, but some boating classics are like peanut butter saltwater taffy, both smooth and salty, and too good to experience only once!

I thought you might want to hear two traditional sailing songs, both written in the 1800’s. The first, “What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor?” is a sea shanty sung by sailors while performing their shipboard labors. The lyrics are a bit salty so we’re listening to a brilliant instrumental version by South Whales musician Rhod McDonagh. The second, “Sailing, Sailing” was recorded by the Mellomen. You may recognize the magnificent voice of this barbershop quartet’s bass singer, Thurl Ravenscroft. Thurl was famously the voice of Tony the Tiger, he sang “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and can still be heard in Disney movies and theme park attractions.

SONG 9 What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor? Rhod McDonagh

SONG 10 Sailing, Sailing (Over the Bounding Main) The Mellomen

Sailing on to songs in the country and folk rock genre, here are boating favorites from Jimmy Buffett, The Oak Ridge Boys and Crosby, Stills & Nash.

SONG 11 Son of a Son of a Sailor Jimmy Buffett

SONG 12 Sail Away The Oak Ridge Boys

SONG 13 Southern Cross Crosby, Stills & Nash

It’s time for a “Cool Change” in music styles. Hope you can visualize the ocean with this song from the Little River Band.

SONG 14 Cool Change Little River Band

The winds are changing once again and we’ll chart a course towards some fun songs! The first one, “Ocean Man” was featured in the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Here are Ween and Weezer.

SONG 15 Ocean Man Ween

SONG 16 Island In the Sun Weezer

Thank you for listening to LoveLane Radio. We hope you get a chance to boat or sail this year. If you’re truly adventurous, maybe a submarine? Here are two lighthearted Beatles hits about the ocean….

SONG 17 Octopus’s Garden The Beatles

SONG 18 Yellow Submarine The Beatles

This boating song was a #1 hit in 1974. Here’s The Hues Corporation with “Rock the Boat.”

SONG 19 Rock the Boat The Hues Corporation

Sailors Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina recorded these two beloved songs, “Watching the River Run” and “Vahevala.” “Watching the River Run” is a wonderful love song and is sometimes danced to by newlyweds and couples celebrating their anniversaries. Enjoy –

SONG 20 Watching the River Run Loggins & Messina

SONG 21 Vahevala Loggins & Messina

Before our musical voyage ends, I’d like to play for you another inspirational song. “Come Sail Away” was written by Styx lead vocalist Dennis DeYoung when he was going through a period of depression. The song’s theme of perseverance and hope resonated and it became one of the group’s biggest hits. As you’ve heard, boating is a great analogy for life…the waters can be smooth or rough, and each of us charts our own course.

SONG 22 Come Sail Away Styx

So long, Sailors! This is your host Linda Davison signing off for now. Thank you for listening and for your support of LoveLane Radio. I hope you are living, or in this case sailing, life in the LoveLane. The Beach Boys will play us out with two ocean classics. Wishing you smooth sailing until the next Show….Bon Voyage!
