French artists Halory Goerger and Antoine Defoort from L’Amicale De Production popped by MAD Wednesday with Michael and Dean to talk about their show Germinal, which is a part of the Melbourne Festival.

They turn the theory of evolution on its head with one of the most talked- about works of contemporary international theatre. What if you had to make everything that ever existed and you only had an hour – how would you do it? Nature took a few billion years to get it right – even the Bible said it was a six-day job.

On an empty stage, four intrepid performers step into the void to construct the world from the very beginning. As this sometimes absurd and humorous creation tale unfurls, characters question physics, construct new rules and dream up language. Using simple theatre tools – mixers, microphones, intercoms, they discover telepathy and invent speech, moving quickly to construct the very foundations of social interaction.

Within an increasingly complex environment, a challenge is posed: in a world-system founded on categories and classifications, how can they maintain togetherness?
