David Platt, Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream, 2010

Intro:

Comment from Bob in a sermon a couple of weeks back: (roughly): “Independence is the darkest it has been in the 34 years I have been here.”

Our responsibility:

Vision Passages:

Matthew 28:19-20

  • Have to all be going
  • Make disciples
    • Someone who obeys teachings of Jesus
    • Teachings include they go and make disciples

Ephesians 4:7-13

  • All believers are gifted
  • Leaders have a single task: equip the use of these gifts

These passages are very active! Obedience requires a paradigm shift of what our goal is for people who come to Maywood.

If someone new came to you…

They are really excited. How do you guide that excitement?

Probably pushed for them to take something out or to start doing something. Woman at the well, the man healed of the legion of demons, Peter himself…

Luke 5:8-10

“When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”

Disinfecting vs. Discipling

David Platt is President of the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board:

“Whereas disinfecting Christians involves isolating them and teaching them to be good, discipling Christians involves propelling Christians into the world to risk their lives for the sake of others. Now the world is our focus, and we gauge success in the church not on the hundreds or thousands whom we can get into our buildings but on the hundreds or thousands who are leaving our buildings to take on the world with the disciples they are making.” (David Platt, Radical, p.105)

We give a lot of celebration to disinfecting. It’s not bad that people are getting free, but that’s not the end goal. We want to make disciples. Active followers.

May be helpful to get out a sheet of paper, feel free to pause.

At Maywood:

  • Who have you seen come and get cleaned-up, only to slow fade out the back door?
  • Who have you seen “sit and soak and sour” as Kathy V. says?
  • Who are the people “who are leaving our buildings to take on the world with the disciples they are making”?
  • How do you see our current structure helping to propel people to change our world?
