Welcome to the second free audio lesson introducing the COPD Module of our Pulmonary Medicine Course. In this lesson, you will hear the doctor explain the causes of COPD. In the last dialogue, the patient told us that her father had emphysema. This dialogue begins with the patient asking if she inherited COPD. You will hear the doctor explain the causes of COPD in Spanish and why it is key that she quit smoking.

¿Entonces heredé esta enfermedad de mi papá?

Doctor:

Es verdad que la gente que tiene antecedentes familiares de la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica tiene más probabilidad de sufrirla. Además, hay una alteración genética poco común llamada deficiencia de alfa-1-antitripsina que puede contribuir al desarrollo de la EPOC.

Sin embargo, la causa principal de esta enfermedad es la exposición prolongada a sustancias nocivas (dañinas), como por ejemplo la contaminación ambiental, el polvo, los vapores químicos, y el humo que irritan y dañan los pulmones.

Patient:

En mi caso, ha de ser por fumar. ¿No, doctor?

Doctor:

Sí. En su caso, fumar es la causa más probable de su enfermedad.

Patient:

Pero fumo menos que antes. Ahora fumo solo media cajetilla al día. ´

Doctor:

Aunque sea menos que antes, si usted sigue fumando la función de sus pulmones empeorará mucho más rápido. Por lo tanto, es clave dejar de fumar. Déjeme preguntarle, ¿Quiere dejar de fumar por completo?

Patient:

En verdad no sé. Mi esposo fuma también, y es parte de nuestra rutina diaria.
