In this mini-series, we’re going to be deep diving into different practices of self-reflection that support a path to your truest self.

First up, I chat with Laurence Shorter aka The Lazy Guru. Laurence began his career in the business world. An MBA graduate and an ex-McKinsey consultant, life in his twenties was dominated by goals, ambition and success. When he realised that something just didn’t feel right, life took an interesting turn and Laurence found himself exploring his creativity. What did he learn about himself during that time?

Finding yourself burnt out can be both difficult and cathartic. You might notice that the same things no longer motivate you or that you have no energy to do what you have been used to doing. One option is to push through these times, keep going and wait for it to pass. But what happens if you take a different path, relinquish your previous life, sell all your belongings and shed an old layer of skin?

Laurence tapped into what he calls a global systemic exhaustion; the result of a period of time driven by achievement over nothingness, doing things instead of being who we are, striving rather than accepting. How does he apply this knowledge to his own life now and what benefits has it brought?

Accepting the part of himself that is driven by goals and achievement as well as the part of himself that rejects commercial enterprise and craves creativity and space at a deep level has been a life long journey. How has he created a life that integrates all of who he is?

Facing inevitable self-judgement is a theme that has come up time and time again in these interviews. That voice inside your head that says you can’t do this, this idea is crazy, who do you think you are for putting yourself out there like this? It is impossible to turn these thoughts off completely, so how can you learn to be with the thoughts and not let them sabotage your true self?
