The Negativity Cycle
Negativity can seem like a force that is nearly impossible to escape. Just turn on the television, look on your social media feed, or have a conversation with the average person, and negativity will be there staring you in the eye, ready to pounce on you. Although we can experience negativity from external influences, negativity is something that can attack us from both the inside and outside.
If we don’t guard against negativity, we will be caught in The Negativity Cycle.

Internal Influence:
Negativity influences us internally through our thoughts and self-talk. When we are faced with issues, we often think of the worst possible outcome. Or when we think of ourselves, we say things, such as stupid, dumb, ugly, and fat. These are all examples of negativity, which is being influenced internally. Instead of thinking of the worst possible outcome, how about thinking of a way to overcome the issue? Instead of calling yourself stupid, dumb, ugly, and fat, how about finding positive things you love about yourself? If you feel you can stand to lose a few pounds, develop a plan to do just that. It’s a much healthier alternative than recycling negative thoughts in your mind.
External Influence:
Externally influenced negativity can come in many different forms. Externally influenced negativity can come from the television, social media, radio, billboards, other people, etc. It’s important to have boundaries when it comes to external negativity. There should be certain influences we don’t allow in our minds or around us. We have all heard the saying, “you can’t lie with dogs and not get fleas.” Well, you can’t lie with negativity and not become negative.
The Negativity Cycle:
If we don’t guard against negativity, we will be caught in The Negativity Cycle. Have you ever just kept thinking of the worst case scenario over and over in your head? Have you ever just kept replaying a negative experience over and over in your head? Well, these are common internal negative cycles. Have you ever dealt with a person who always complains and never has anything positive to say? Perhaps a person who always sees problems and never look for solutions? If so, that’s when you know you are caught in an external negative cycle.
