On this episode of Trapped in the Screening Room, we take a tour of the magnificent Orient express. The movie in question is Kenneth Branagh’s retelling of Agatha Christie’s MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. Branagh brings this classic murder mystery back to the screen and reintroduces the eccentric super sleuth Hercule Poirot. The film also boosts an all-star cast featuring Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., William Dafoe, Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, and Olivia Colman. As we dive deeper into the review, we also look at Branagh’s career as a director and his Shakespeare beginnings. Does this Shakespeare background out shadow this film? Or does it add the right operatic tone? Find out more in this episode. Also touched on, are Branagh’s HAMLET, THOR, JACK RYAN SHADOW RECRUIT, and Disney’s live action version of CINDERELLA (2015). We also discuss Poirot in media. We also question which is the most loved actor to play him. Is it David Suchet in the hit TV series Agatha Christie’s Poirot? Or maybe Albert Finney in the 1974 MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS? And of course we can’t leave out the now infamous mustache. Which Branagh brings to life with epic intensity. For the retro movie of the week, we look at another famous Christie adaptation, 1978’s DEATH ON THE NILE. Peter Ustinov plays Poirot this time, in his first of 6 films. The film also is filled with tons of references to other murder mysteries. The film is right for rediscovery and offers a usual and wildly different version of the famous detective.
