***This Episode Has a Spoiler Section*** The first (37ish) minutes of this Oscar Sprint Profile for The Big Sick are spoiler free, we turn up the treble on some spoiler music, and then we give you the full spoiler filled review. The Big Sick Oscar Sprint Profile Non-Spoilers Cast & Crew: (Apatow, Showalter, Nanjiani, Kazan, Hunter, & Romano) - 2:18 Production Profile - 11:29 Movie Specs - 14:49 Expectations - 20:56 Production Values - 23:39 Performance Reviews - 30:04 Final Pre-Spoiler Thoughts - 33:31 Spoiler Music - 37:10 Story Inception Wrap-Up - 38:56 The Big Sick is Just a RomCom Scream - 52:11 Best Scenes/Worst Scenes - 59:42 Killing RomCom Conventions Wrap-Up - 1:08:11 Grades - 1:10:58 Final Thoughts - 1:11:50 This is our Oscar Sprint Profile of Amazon Prime’s streaming hit, The Big Sick. Directed by Wet Hot American Summer’s Michael Showalter and produced by every comedy’s Judd Apatow, The Big Sick stars Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, and Ray Romano. We open the show with their filmographies, we lament the lack of Oscar Noms, but we’re rooting for the Best Original Screenplay nod, and we’ll cover this movie once more in that upcoming pod. Our production notes cover some of the highlights from the promotional tour including Also Mike’s impressions of Ray Romano and somehow Bryan Gumbel, and we’ll continue some production notes later on in the spoiler section. We have a surprisingly competent chat about the production values and win arguments we formerly lost back in film school (Take That, Director of Photography on my Pizza Delivery Guy short film back at school!), and we tackle some of the editing and shot selection methodologies for comedic storytelling. The non-spoiler review finishes with a chat about the performances as we gush like we’ve never gushed before over the supporting cast, which includes an array of our favorite comedians, irresistibly likable actors, and even a Bollywood legend. The spoiler section offers a fuller review, plus another set of production notes we chronicle the various stages of pre-production. It’s a great story in it’s own right. Then we discuss some of our best scenes, our lack of worst scenes, and we give you a breakdown of the entire romantic comedy genre, which is also the B-Story of our podcast. Don’t miss this harrowing tale of the warming of Mike No 1’s cold loveless heart. It’s some of our best work to date. We certainly recommend you see this movie on Amazon Prime or whatever VOD route you choose. It’s the perfect weekend watch at home. Hopefully you’re enjoying our Oscar Sprint thus far. We’ll finish our OSPs this coming week. Go back and listen to our pods on whatever movies you missed, watch those flicks and then listen to our breakdowns, or listen however you choose. Those episodes are on demand for your audible pleasure. Please continue to talk to us online & via social media. We’re on facebook, instagram, twitter, reddit, and gmail. A positive review on iTunes, a follow or a like on Soundcloud and Stitcher will certainly help us raise our profile. But of course, there’s no better way to market than word of mouth. So yes, please continue to tell friends and relatives about our little show. Thanks for doing as much thus far, and as always, thanks for listening. When reality sucks, watch movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar!
