Naima Penniman is committed to social, environmental, racial, and gender justice, planetary health, and love expansion. She is the cofounder of Wildseed, a black- and brown-led, feminine-centered, queer-loving, earth-based intentional community and healing sanctuary focused on transformative justice and intergenerational responsibility. She is the cofounder/co-artistic director with Alixa Garcia of Climbing PoeTree, an internationally-acclaimed performance duo that uses art as a tool for popular education, community activism, and personal transformation. We discuss overcoming shyness to find a voice and purpose, honoring ancestors and the courage to challenge dominant stories in our society. We also talk about the difference between calling in vs. calling out in movement culture. And Naima shares her thoughts on where creative passion and activism intersects for the greater good.

We also talk about:

  • Being raised in an activist home

  • Creativity as a place to metabolize grief

  • Connecting with our inherent gifts

  • How communities can increase empathy
