My Coach Meliss Personal Development Podcast – Episode #28

Hey guys! This week is Thanksgiving and I love this holiday because it forces families to get together and do things as a family. It forces you to sit at a table, enjoy each other’s company and conversation and really express quality time with quality people in your life. It’s an amazing holiday for that reason but also it is teaching us that we need to be thankful. This is something that I talk about all the time, gratitude, being thankful, showing thanks for things in your life. It’s absolutely required on this holiday as the holiday name states. Thanks-giving. It’s a time to be thankful.

Before I started my podcast as I usually do, I go speak to my eight year old and I say, “Hey Ilan, what is a good topic for this week’s podcast?” And very often he comes up with great topics that either I use or they spark other things in my mind that I end up using. He’s a great resource for me, he really understands the world around him. He understands where people struggle and where they can improve. So, I said to him, “This week is Thanksgiving and I want the theme to be something about Thanksgiving, but I always talk about gratitude so how can I make this podcast extra special?” And he said, “Talk to them about what giving thanks really is”.

For example, when you go to the store and you buy your groceries, think about not just the food that you’re going to eat, but every single person that was involved in making that food a possibility for you. So, thank the people who paved the road when you park your car outside, thank the people who bring the shopping carts in, thank the people who packaged the food, or the farmers who grew the food, or the people who unloaded the truck and put the food on the shelf, thank the people that ring up your food. Thank every single person that put their hands, their time, or their expertise into the food that you’re eating. And when you get home and you’re preparing the food be thankful that you have that food to prepare for you and everyone that you love. Then when you eat the food be grateful for every bite, savor every bite and really take in how lucky you are to be eating such a fabulous meal with those around you that you love. Think about how fortunate you are because not everybody has that luxury. Not everybody has food whenever they want and need it. Not everybody is surrounded by friends and family. So really take into account what you are thankful for.

Maybe you can say thank you to the people in the store when you pass them by. Be friendlier than you normally are. Stop someone on the street and ask them how their day was. When you’re standing in line to check out, start a conversation with somebody because you never know, you might be the only person that’s communicated with that person for the day and it might be a life changing thing for them or for you. So, going into this Thanksgiving I want you to really dive deep into what you’re thankful for, break it down, and make sure you don’t forget about all of the little details. Be grateful for waking up in the morning, be grateful for the day of Thanksgiving, be grateful for the days leading up to Thanksgiving, be grateful for having had Thanksgiving when the holiday is over. Don’t forget to carry on that gratitude past the holiday, it’s just like having Father’s Day or Mother’s Day, we don’t only celebrate our fathers or our mothers on those days, it’s just an extra reminder so we’re extra sure that we do celebrate them.

The same thing goes for Thanksgiving. Please don’t make Thanksgiving the only time that you’re grateful. Really reach out and think about what makes you happy, and why you have these things around you, and how you can be grateful for these things. Then make sure you do it on Thanksgiving especially but carry it on longer than just the day after or the next. I want you to try and be thankful every single day of your life because you’re here for a reason, you have a purpose and every morning that you wake up is a gift. So, happy Thanksgiving to those of you that celebrate, be well, enjoy your families, enjoy your time off from work if you have that and be grateful for everything in your life that you do have.
