I must admit I eat way too much fast food. Me and McDonalds go together like salt goes with pepper. They are simply the perfect mixture!

But, it’s really not good for my diet plans or for fat levels in my body. So even though I still have a habit of heading to McDonalds, at least some of my meals are cut down thanks to my own home cooking.

content graphic

What I am talking about here is not attempting to work out the sauce McDonalds puts in a Big Mac (has anyone cracked that yet?) but to look at how to make a super tasty homemade burger at home so that you don’t need to go out and buy one!

  • Or what about a KFC?
  • Or a Milkshake?
  • Or an Indian?

Well the list goes on and on doesn’t it?

After all we all want something we can’t have or shouldn’t have. Therefore I have put together an extensive list of my favourite recipes that you can make a cheats low calorie version of.

My Ultimate 20 Healthy Cheats Recipes:

#1 – Garlic Chicken Lasagne Recipe

garlic chicken lasagne COPY

This actually appeared on my last countdown too. And why? Because it is an amazing way to cook lasagne for a lot less calories.

If you love lasagne and love chicken then you’ll love this J

#2 – Lancashire Hotpot

lancashire

If you have ever watched Coronation Street you’ll know exactly what a Lancashire Hotpot is. If you haven’t then add meat to a nice little pot, add sliced potato to the top, then add lots of amazing flavours that bring it alive.

The beauty of this dish is that it doesn’t need to be fattening and it tastes amazing especially if you slow cook it.

#3 – Cheese Scones

cheese scones

I wouldn’t be from England and not like Cheese Scones; they have the wow factor through and through. Whether you have them with cream or just with a cup of tea, they are delightful!

I remember when I was at secondary school the first thing we ever learnt how to bake was scones and I can still make them with just as much butter!

However this is my low calorie version so let me know what you think!

#4 – Paella

paella

My son’s favourite food in the world is lasagne, my husband’s is fish and chips and mine is paella. Surprisingly, as a child I absolutely hated rice, but as an adult it is in practically every single meal that I like.

I have had it for years after first discovering it on holiday in Spain as a kid and it’s full of flavour and love. If you are looking for a nice healthy rice dish then check out my paella.

#5 – Mac & Cheese Recipe

mac adb cheese

As a kid my favourite recipe was always Mac & Cheese or as us British call it Macaroni Cheese. It is super fattening, full of carbs and pleases any child.

But you can’t be eating it the naughty way when you’re trying to lose weight so this is my healthy way!

#6 – My Cheats KFC Chicken & Coleslaw

kfc chicken

I was a late developer as far as KFC was concerned. More into McDonalds and other fast foods I really didn’t need any one that I liked.

I eventually got a taste for it, but was also very disappointed that all my favourite dishes at KFC had a lot more calories in it than a McDonalds and thought I better stay clear, unless I had a really bad craving for it!

This is when I put together my low calorie, but south American KFC inspired drumsticks along with some coleslaw, that way you can your own KFC moment at home.

#7 – My Healthy Sauce World

homemade sauce

Eating always seems to revolve around a sauce of some sort or another. Whether its ketchup on your chips or mayonnaise in your sandwiches.

But then you look a little closer and realise that the sauce in your burger has more calories in it than a bar of chocolate. Then you think to yourself how much weight you would lose just by dropping the sauce.

So I have put together a few of my favourite cheat sauces.

#8 – My Healthy McDonalds

mcdonalds

I love McDonalds – actually I love it so much I have probably been every month to an outlet since I was about 12.

At the height of my obesity that was probably more like 1-2 per week, so to cut it back down I have started making my own versions of the tasty burger, chips and milkshake for a very small amount of calories and fat in comparison.

#9 – Make Pizza Hut Inspired Food At Home

pizza

It would be wrong if pizza hut wasn’t on the list wouldn’t it? Well Pizza Hut food is much better in Portugal than I remember in the UK. I put this down to all the extra virgin olive oil that they use that is amazing.

But if you want to escape the high fat then give my homemade pizza a whirl.

#10 – Chicken Fried Rice Without Carbs

fried rice

I love chicken fried rice and it is one of my favourite dishes. It is hardly good for you though is it? You can still have it on some diets like Slimming World & Weight Watchers because of replacing the oils with fat free cooking spray.

However, sometimes I have found that I have just eaten too many carbs and have an incredibly full stomach. With this recipe we use cauliflower as a replacement rice and it tastes too good to be true!

Now that we are at the half way point – how about a quick funny quote to make you smile?

chocolate quote

#11 – Beef Lasagne The Healthy Way!

beef lasagne

Here is your chance to enjoy some beef lasagne at home but without the super high fats. I love beef lasagne, but I also know that it is not good for me either!

That’s why I have designed a lower calorie version with lean mince and a different type of cheese sauce. No butter or flour in this recipe though!

#12 – Reduced Calorie Steak & Ale Pie

steak and ale pie

We all know that steak and ale pie is bad for us, but we still eat it. The steak melts in our mouths, the pastry tastes delicious from all the butter and then there is the hint of some ale too.

But I was determined to make a healthier version and this is what you have here!

#13 – Slow Cooked Lemon Chicken

lemon chicken

I love my slow cooker and it’s the perfect size for cooking a roast in it. Well it can stretch to a medium sized chicken, though I doubt I could squeeze a turkey in it!

This is my favourite lemon chicken recipe and it tastes even better knowing it came from a lemon from my lemon tree.

#14 – Tandorri Chicken With Spicy Potatoes

tandorri

Here is how to add some Indian flavours to your cooking without adding an extra tyre around your stomach!

I love Indian Cuisine and one of my favourites is Tandorri Chicken though normally when I have it I end up adding lots of sauces. This however is me being good with a healthy version.

#15 – Dominic’s Ultimate Roast Dinner

roast dinner

Dominic has always made a fabulous roast dinner; he has been making them for that long, that he was doing them before we even met. That was when he was working as a chef at a British carvery and he has never disappointed me since.

This is his healthy version of the typical roast dinner with all the trimmings and a lot less fat!

#16 – Healthy Fish & Chips

fish and chips

Sorry to break it to you, but this is a healthy version of the British Fish & Chips = bye bye batter!

But it still tastes really nice and makes a fantastic Friday night tea!

#17 – Fat Free Mexican Rice

mexican rice

I love Mexican food. It is all yummy, if not a bit too spicy sometimes for my tastes. One of the dishes I have always liked has been traditional Mexican Rice. Its full of flavour and heat and provides you with fantastic comfort food. I normally end up eating it after a very long day while watching television with Dominic and it’s the perfect end to the day.

This is a healthier version, though the nutritionists out there will still be shouting at me for serving it with white rice!

#18 – Curry House Inspired Chicken Jalfrezi

chicken jalfrezi

This was always the curry I would have when I worked in an Indian Takeaway. It was what was leftover after the end of service and my parents would end up with a freezer full of them. They were gorgeous and I was always walking around with one. Thankfully, at the time I was super active so it never resulted in a pound of fat on me.

Things are different these days though and this one is a healthy version!

#19 – Kids Chicken Nuggets The Quality Way!

nuggets

Chicken nuggets when bought from the shop are very unhealthy. They are the leftover rubbish from the chicken which should end up in the bin, but ends up being used to make something. And that’s what your kids get. Then there is the batter on top of them.

This recipe is for quality chicken nuggets using quality ingredients and ditching the batter. Your kids will love these!

#20 – A Taste Of The Caribbean With My Jerk Chicken Recipe

jerk chicken

I love Jerk Chicken. It’s only a mild spice so if you are not good with chilli then this is a great spiced dish to try out.
