Marshaling a people to a common cause is never an easy task. In the case of the Jews, who have through history been spread throughout the world into highly segregated communities, in the late 1800s the movements of world Communism and nationalist Zionism vied for mindshare among the Jewish diaspora. After the death of Theodor Herzl, the father of modern political Zionism, in 1904, Zeev Jabotinsky came to prominence as the leader of Revisionist Zionism and the chief proponent of the right and duty of return for international Jewry to the land of Palestine. Although he died in 1940 before the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, his ideas went on to form the basis for much of the political theory behind the Israeli government and in particular the modern political party of the Likud.
