Mother, Should I Build the Wall? (Parental Estrangement) Over the course of each of our lives, we will have many various kinds of relationships. Many or most will come and go; some through time and attrition, unintentionally. Some through growing apart, or even quarrels. A small, rare handful might last through the years, through most if not all our lives. But for better or worse, the one kind of relationship that is universal, and with which we are effectively tied, even if it dissolves and breaks, or even if we begin life apart from them because of various reasons, is that with our family. Relationships can be complicated and fraught, especially if one party changes how they feel about things and the other one has not, or if circumstances cause changes that erode the dynamic in some way. This is true of all kinds of relationships, from friendships to neighbors to school friends, to working relationships, other professional and business relationships, and especially our very first relationships that all of us have; our family of origin.
