After the Patriots took home their sixth Lombardi Trophy this February, retirement was at the forefront of Rob Gronkowski's mind.

Nine seasons and countless injuries had the tight end contemplating the choice for a long time.

Finally, via Instagram, Gronk announced the grave news. He would not be suiting up for a tenth season. This came just days after the free agency deadline closed while Bill Belichick was vacationing in the Caribbean.

How much trouble does this put the Patriots in? Will they be able to find a suitable replacement in time?

And it's undeniable that Rob Gronkowski had one of the best careers as a tight end in the history of the NFL.

The man has 12 postseason touchdown catches, behind only Jerry Rice. He averaged a whopping 15 yards per reception. But, is he truly the greatest tight end to ever play the game?

Can he claim the title over other greats like Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Antonio Gates, and Dwight Clark?
