The Battle For Equality “All men are created equal”

The Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln / November 19, 1863

The Battle For Equality In History

  • Abraham Lincoln called for the end of slavery proposing the 13th Amendment (part of his party platform for the 1864 election).
  • Martin Luther King Jr., minister, activist and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement and Nobel Peace Prize recipient for combating racial inequality through non-violent resistance.
  • Women’s Rights for equality 19th & 20th centuries; to vote, education, freedom from sexual violence, equal rights in family law, fair and equal pay, have reproductive rights, etc.
  • LGBTQ social movements advocate for the equalized acceptance of LGBT people in society. The earliest organizations to support LGBT rights were formed in the 19th century.

Equality, for “all” has been foundational in the birth and development of these United States and woven into the fabric of our very existence as a nation, established “under God.”

Let us now look at…Equality & God In light of faith, and the Kingdom

Jesus Representing God In Equality

The Parable of the Vineyard Workers

When they received their pay, they began to grumble against the landowner. ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’ “But he answered, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? Matthew 20:11-13

Beyond “Equal Work, Equal Pay”

  • Human Rights
    • Equal pay for equal work.
  • God’s Generosity
    • A full, fair day’s pay for a full day’s work
    • A full day’s pay for an hour of work

Equality In Need

2 Corinthians 8:7 But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving. 8 I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.

2 Corinthians 8:13 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 …The goal is equality…

  • Jesus to the Rich Ruler: sell your possessions and give to the poor.
  • Zacchaeus, entertains Jesus for lunch and agrees to give half of what he owns to the poor and four times the amount to those he cheated.

When There Is No Equality

Philippians 2:6-8 Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn’t claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion.

Wrap It Up To Go

  • Contribute to our “new nation, under God” working for equality on a foundation laid.
  • God’s view of equality is higher than yours and reflects great generosity, not your earning potential.
  • Our fight for equality should cost us something to benefit those in need.
  • Our final equalizing experience will be realized as people transformed in the Kingdom of God.
