I've called this sermon on 2 Peter 3:8-14 "Preparing for the End of the World." (How's that for an attention-grabbing, click-baity title?) I have found that there are basically two types of Christians: those who get obsessed with studying the end times and those that want to avoid anything to do with it (largely because they want to avoid talking about it with the first group of people!). Unfortunately, neither of these extremes are helpful nor are they biblical. In this passage, Peter briefly writes about some things that will happen when Christ returns, but his emphasis is not on a sequence of events nor on trying to figure out a date. Peter wants us to understand that everything we see in this world and are tempted to get caught up in or make a priority will pass away. He wants us to live our lives with the priorities of eternity in view. My goal is not to convince us to stock up on emergency food or to draw fancy end-times charts. My goal is for us to understand what Peter means in 2 Peter 3:11 where, based on what he says will happen to the world, he asks "what kind of people ought you to be?"
