Myth. Legend. Rumour.

The bodies of MS and 18th street gang members show up in the middle of the streets with notes attached “This asshole suffered a slow death”. Unmarked SUV’s with tinted windows are seen cruising slowly through the neighbourhood. Gang members cover their tattoos and hide their guns. The black shadow covers the country.

The hard men of the country, the police and the military who once formed the death squads of the Salvadoran military, had taken justice into their own hands. Their mission? Rid the country of mareros – gangsters. They they took up arms again and called themselves the Black Shadow – La Sombra Negra.

Years ago they went away – I don’t know why – but they seem to be back. Sombra Negra graffiti and fliers warn gangsters to flee or die. A facebook page and a youtube channel spout Sombra Negra propaganda. It’s possible that the black shadow is spreading across El Salvador again.
