Quicksilver Chronicles is a collection of short stories / vignettes that melt together to make a full-length book telling the story of life out in the middle of nowhere, San Benito County California. It is set in a 4-person suburb of the abandoned ghost town of New Idria and is home to a zaney cast of characters. Wood’s ability to tell a story, turn a phrase, and poke at the truths around her is uncanny. The characters in Quicksilver Chronicles are insane but intelligent and create a dizzying surreality marked orange by the omnipresence of the contaminated water that runs about 20 feet from the main character’s cabin. This is a biting, contemporary SNAP at our country and its governing systems - as mercury-poisoned abandoned mine dwelling mad hatters march through days of drunkenness, firecrackers, elections rigged by a mayor who happens to be a cat, and whimsical scenes that play through the readers mind like a variety show. Wood’s satire is the truth, it is not fiction, it is story, STORY. Wood’s style and voice on the page is telling of her proficiency in 20th century American culture, harkening voices that are a cross between Mark Twain and Alice Walker. So without further adieu, here is an exceprt for your listening pleasure - So here it is: Quicksilver Chronicles as read by Krysztov.
