The latest article from the Overcome Depression + Thrive Blog.

If you’ve been diagnosed with depression, chances are you’ve been prescribed some antidepressant medications as part of your treatment.

But, how do these antidepressants affect your brain? And, more importantly, how can you reset your brain after taking these SSRI’s or other antidepressant drugs?

Well, in this episode of Overcome Depression + Thrive, that’s exactly what we’re going to be discussing!

Three proven ways to reset your brain after taking antidepressant medications.

Press play now to listen to the Podcast Episode or watch the video below.

READ TRANSCRIPT BELOW:

Hi and welcome back, as always, it’s great to have you here! I’m your host Marie O’Neil, creator of the highly transformative 42-day Overcome Depression and Thrive Online Program and the Author of How To Create A Depression-Free Life.

Now, I’m excited to say today’s episode is centred around yet, another fabulous question! This time the question was asked by Giancarlo in response to my video: How Do Antidepressants Work?

After watching that quick video, which gives a basic overview of how SSRIs, SNRIs and NDRIs are said to work, Giancarlo asked:

“Are there any supplements and things we can take to reset our brains back to how they were before taking SSRI’s?”

YouTube Channel: Overcome Depression + Thrive!

It’s an excellent question and that’s why I want to devote this entire episode to it. So, thank you Giancarlo for asking this question.

Now, before we get started….

If you don’t have a basic understanding of how antidepressant medications work within your brain and how it’s possible for them to quite literally change how your brain works by altering the internal mechanics of your brain, then I highly recommend you go and check out my video: How Do Antidepressants Work?

But, if you don’t want to check that out right now, then if I was to sum up that entire video in just one sentence, it would be this:

Antidepressants (especially SSRIs, SNRIs and NDRIs) all create an unnatural chemical imbalance within our brain and directly affect how our brain works and interfere with its natural brain processes.

So, after having our brain processes disrupted by antidepressant medications, are there any supplements and things we can take to reset our brains back to how they were before taking them?

Well, I’m not sure about things we can take but there are definitely proven things we can do to reset and regenerate our brains and today, I’m going to be sharing 3 proven ways to do just that!

So, let’s get started!

#1: Get Creative

That’s right! Scientific studies show that if we regularly participate in a creative activity our brains can quite literally reformat or rewire themselves.

Now, the scientific term for this “rewiring of our brain” is known as: Neuroplasticity.

Simply put…

Neuroplasticity is our brains ability to reorganise or restructure itself by creating new neural connections or neural networks within our brain to compensate for any injury or damage.

In other words, if one neural network or highway within our brain is blocked, damaged or ineffective our brain has the ability (via this process of Neuroplasticity) to create brand-new neural networks to compensate for this.

It can quite literally reroute or change neural pathways to ensure our brain is working to the best of its abilities.

Now, why is this vitally important to be aware of after taking SSRI’s or any other antidepressant medications?

Well, if we feel we’re experiencing any short or long-term damage from taking these drugs, or we believe that our brain cells have been “killed off” somehow, we need to be aware that our brain is NOT beyond repair.

You see, the latest research in the field of neuroscience is proving that brain cells are NOT finite.

Our brain is NOT fixed or unchangeable. It’s NOT rigid.

So, this belief that many people have about depression and it creating a limited brain or limited brain functions, is just plain wrong.

It’s a misconception based on outdated belief systems and limited science.

Because, up-to-date, cutting-edge science is proving quite the contrary!

It’s showing that our brain CAN and DOES repair and regenerate itself under the right conditions.

All we need to do, is give our brain those right conditions to “kickstart” this process of repair and renewal into action. Which then allows us to quite literally rewire and reset our brain and get it back to its optimal state.

So, how do we “kickstart”this process to reformat and repair our brain?

Well, scientific studies show that regular participation in creative tasks (especially those involving visual motor skills) such as; pottery, painting, photography, dancing, learning a musical instrument or even juggling, activates this process of renewal and repair within our brain.

So, via simple creative activities we can quite literally rewire and reset our brain!

And, do you want to know the best part?

We don’t need to be any good at any of these activities! We just need to participate, learn, challenge our brains and make some progress. Because, any progress we make (no matter how large or small) is a magnificent sign that our brain is expanding and creating new neural networks and that’s what we’re after!

New neural networks or pathways which expand and enhance our brain, improve cognitive function and get our brain running on all cylinders!

The more neural pathways we can create between all the areas of our brain, the greater capacity our brain has to function at its highest ability.

So, whether you’re taking antidepressants or not, if you want to rapidly reset your brain, going creative is key!

#2: Shift Into Your Thriving Centre

Now, if you’ve watched my Free Masterclass you’re familiar with the term “Thriving Centre”, as you know, it’s the centre in which depression no longer exists.

On the other hand, if you haven’t watched my Free Masterclass yet, then naturally, you’ll have no idea what I’m talking about.

And, if that’s the case then I highly recommend you go check out my Free Masterclass: How To Rapidly Overcome Depression By Effectively Treating The Root Cause, as this will help give you the big picture overview of what I’m about to talk about.

But, simply put….

Your Thriving Centre is part of your Autonomic Nervous System, which ultimately controls whether you stay in depression or lift yourself out of it. Not only that….

It’s also key to reseting your brain after coming off antidepressants.

Why?

Well, it’s due to the fact, that when we consciously shift ourselves into our Thriving Centre we activate a natural process within our brains, known as: Neurogenesis.

Neurogenesis is the growth of new neural tissue or the process by which new neurons are formed within our brain. In other words…

When we shift into our Thriving Centre, not only do we protect ourselves from depression but we can also regenerate our brains.

So, by simply completing these first two simple steps:

  1. Regularly participating in a creative activity, and
  2. Shifting ourselves into our Thriving Centre

We can, not only, free ourselves from depression but we also activate two extremely powerful natural brain processes: Neuroplasticity and Neurogenesis.

Which allows us to repair, regenerate, rewire and reset our brains!

And, if you’d like to know the right way to shift into your Thriving Centre and rapidly activate this process of Neurogenesis, then you’ll want to check out my 42-day Overcome Depression + Thrive Online Program.

This is where I take you by the hand and show you exactly how to easily and quickly shift into your Thriving Centre.

So, you can rapidly overcome depression, improve and repair brain function, and control your internal chemistry, rather than it controlling you!

And, if you’d like to know more about how you can get started today, then simply visit: OvercomeDepressionAndThrive.com/GetStarted.

#3: Nourish Your Brain

You see, there’s no question that what we eat affects overall brain health and function.

So, if we’re wanting to heal our brain and our entire body-mind system then eating the right types of whole, clean foods which nourish, nurture and restore our body-mind system to optimal health, is key!

Now, I’m fully aware that many health professionals recommend supplements for depression, but I’m not one of them.

Simply because of two reasons.

  1. I don’t personally believe in taking supplements, if you do, that’s cool, it’s your choice. I just personally see them as a “quick, short-term fix” rather than a long-term, workable solution like, changing our diet and lifestyle.
  2. I don’t believe anyone can or even should give a blanket recommendation for a specific supplement (or any medication for that matter) without first knowing the unique internal chemistry of an individuals body.

For example, there’s plenty of research out there which says Magnesium is great for depression.

But, here’s the thing…

If we blindly take magnesium in supplement form without first having a blood test, we could be doing ourselves more harm, than good.

So, that’s why I prefer to advise having a blood test to understand your unique internal chemistry, along with a healthy diet which includes all the right types of foods which are proven to help fight depression, alleviate anxiety and reduce stress as these will naturally improve overall health and well-being.

And, if you want to discover the right kinds of foods and spices to include in your diet which have been proven to alleviate depression, reduce anxiety, boost energy and improve cognitive function, then be sure to check out my brand-new ‘Foods That Fight Depression’ section on my website as this will help you to uncover which foods are right for you.

So from today, if you’re ever worried about your brain’s health after taking antidepressants, remember…

We CAN rewire, regenerate and improve the health of our brain!

And, repairing any damage is not only possible but it’s also proven to be something anyone can do!

Our brain is NOT fixed, rigid or unchangeable. It’s fluid and adapts to our environment, lifestyle and behaviour. In other words…

The keys to our brain health and the health of our entire body-mind system are held firmly within our hands.

And, those keys are:

  1. Get creative!
  2. Shift into your Thriving Centre!
  3. Eat, live and think healthy!

Now, I hope you enjoyed this episode and found it helpful, if you did, I’d love to know in the comments section below what your biggest takeaway was.

You are not stuck, you are not limited and you can overcome depression and thrive!

Take care, talk to you soon, bye for now 😉
