Lower back pain is the most common reason to see a physician for pain and the number one cause of disability. Some patients with lower back pain eventually require spinal surgery. Unfortunately, 20% to 40% of these patients will develop failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS or FBS) after the first surgery. FBSS, also known as postlaminectomy syndrome, is defined as “lumbar spinal pain of unknown origin either persisting despite surgical intervention or appearing after surgical intervention for spinal pain originally in the same topographical location.” During this presentation, we will learn more about FBSS, its pathology, causes, diagnosis, management, and treatment options.
