Hi, I’m Ricardo Turullols-Bonilla, remote paternal ancestry Catalan and maternal Castilian, crypto Latino Jew, originally from Mexico, and UT, University of Texas at Austin Physics ’70, IC, Imperial College London, UNAM, National Autonomous University of Mexico, and UIA, Iberian American University, Mexico City.
This makes me 5-way stakeholder in Catalonia’s Independence bid from Spain. My request is that we install a forum to dialogue University world-wide this issue ASAP. The end result has to be a win-win-win-win situation to all concerned, namely, Catalonia, Spain, Europe, and by extension, world-wide.
We shouldn’t let a good crisis go to waste. In this singularity, unique state of affairs, it happens to be the case that the topic is the issue. What we have before us is a crisis of the mainstay of the West, what we understand by democracy. But here again, it’s not democracy alone that is at stake, rather, democracy might be the topic, but the issue is understanding.
Let me first explain what I mean by saying that the topic of Catalonia’s independence bid from Spain, actually showcases the issue facing modernity moving forward. For too long we have been living out a stalemate situation of a prolonged crisis of Western civilization. The initial impulse given to the West by Israel, Greece, and Rome, has long since vanished into the gray background.
What is now needed is a grassroots renewal, not more of the same top-down rancid Continental and Anglophone philosophies of postmodernity that miss the point to a considerable degree, if not entirely. Enough vitality has already been shed in useless struggles in the far and near past, that we surely need creativity to step up to the plate.
Necessity is verily the mother of resourcefulness, and there’s nothing like a good crisis to put the stressed system to the test. The question is, will the globalized world of East-&-West deliver this time around?
The understanding democracy theme is actually the issue of the primeval, the original common-sense, the ultimate source of reason. For reason is at the cornerstone of all learning, what universities do for a living, such that updating it would have a refreshing overall effect on civilization.
I wrote a book precisely on the above theme, entitled “PaRDeSism ~ Human Science 101”, same that can be found on the Internet, in paperback and eBook format, in English, and in its Spanish translation. If we want the social edifice to continue ever higher, scraping the skies, then we need to concurrently dig deeper, till we reach bedrock. Nothing less than this will do on the long run.
This essay addresses Crisis City, covering worldviews, starting with modernity of Newton; of the School of Athens, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle; of the three schools of the preSocratics, Thales of Miletus, the Milesian, Xenophanes of Colophon and Parmenides of Elea, the Eleatic, and Pythagoras of Samos, the Pythagorean; and finally, Moses of the Pentateuch Chumash Five Books, of the Kabbalah.
What I found was that there is an ultimate cornerstone to reason, a primeval, an original common-sense. It is PaRDeS PaRaDiSe, an acronym standing for Sod Secret, Derash Discover, Rémez Remite, and Peshat Plain. This, coincidently or not, is the hermeneutics of Biblical exegesis.
But, you might be wondering, how could we have missed it, this PaRDeS primeval common-sense thing, it being so obvious? Perhaps, precisely on account of its being so innate, that we’ve grown accustomed to it and missed it altogether. Or, maybe it’s always been at the tip of our tongue, but was never quite enunciated, out loud, at least.
The challenge that I faced was making intelligible to the modern mindset the solution of PaRDeS that I found source-coded in the first book of Moses. Of making the connection between, on the one hand, classical and modern secular thought, and on the other hand, archaic beliefs. For it is the case that contemporary values live a life of double-standards.
One, of a modified classical Newtonian worldview, building on the philosophy of the School of Athens, whereas the wisdom of Moses is so disconnected from philosophy and science, usually relegated to the sphere of religion. This is presented by way of the subtitle of my book PaRDESism ~ Human Science 101, namely, the subtitle being “PaRDeS primevalism, treeseeding our original common-sense on the Bible’s Creation Story 1:1-2:3; World ReConstitution, from Crisis City to PaRaDiSe Earth”.
Luckily, I found such a stepping stone between Greece and Israel in the Pythagoreans of preSocratic times, Philolaus of Croton and Ion of Chios, who, back in the V century bce, in the Greek colony of Ionia, today’s northern coast of Turkey, made an affirmation that still reverberates today.
The claim of Ion of Chios was that the virtue of all things is that the whole is made up of a triad of parts; by triads meaning that the parts are to each other, as are the sides and hypotenuse of a right-triangle.
Imagine that! Summing it all in a nutshell, that everything, at the end of the day, is made up of a triad. Of three parts, hanging together like in the Pythagorean theorem, or equally well, like the two faces and rim of a coin. Allow me to quietly unpack the above concept of PaRDeS PaRaDiSe, thus unfolding the representations of the right-triangle and the coin analogies.
As we were saying, starting with the coin, its faces don’t touch, yet they are connected by way of the rim. Same in the case of the right-triangle, being the sides orthogonal, they are independent, yet, are related second story by way of the hypotenuse.
An example should suffice to clear the concept. We ourselves are triads: we are one, all the while we are parts, body, mind, and spirit. That is, the body and the spirit don’t touch, however, they are connected second story by way of the mind.
With this brief, but remarkable introduction, we can now address the quest of the people of Catalonia for its independence from the modern nation-state of Spain. All this as part of the European Union, let me emphasize. In what follows we’ll piggy-back on the one Principle of PaRDeS, as above defined and understood.
At stake, is, what is identity, what constitutes a whole? As in the principle of self-determination of peoples, what constitutes a people? A whole is made up of a triad of parts, in this case, of a history, a language, and a sentiment of people.
Catalonia is a whole, a people, because it satisfies the triad condition of having its own history, its own language, and its own unique sense of identity.
Perhaps a counter example could help to fine tune things. Say, does Barcelona constitute a whole, in this people sense? Well, let’s use the T-diagram, does it satisfy the Triad criteria?
Well, for starts, does Barcelona have its own history? Yes and no, it shares it with Girona. Does it have its own language? Yes and no, it shares it with Lleida. Does it have its own identity? Yes and no, it is species, Barcelonan, to the genus, Catalonian, of which there are other species as well, say a native of Tarragona. Conclusion, Barcelona is not a people, rather part of the whole, of Catalonia.
The people feeling is that there’s a reason for its existence, in the greater scheme of things. Just like the individual as a whole, not its arm, nor shoulder, but the whole has the feeling of purpose innately.
Where does royalty, monarchy, play in all this, regarding the Kingdom and all its provinces? There’s reason of being, and there’s reason to be. Certain things are consensual, while others are existential.
Of course, Catalonia is not alone in satisfying the above criteria, there are numerous other peoples inscribed within the borders of today’s nation states. Be it in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and elsewhere. But, that is precisely the point.
The point being the universality of the specifics of the case of Catalonia’s secessionist bid from Spain. That is, that this is precisely what makes the topic of Catalonia’s independence bid from Spain, the theme of democracy, and ultimately, the underlying issue of understanding.
