You've heard the popular perks of working remotely (and yes, they're true!). Work in your pajamas, avoid the commute, answer emails from a hammock while sipping a pineapple daiquiri—you've heard them all. However, there are a few things that may surprise you about what it's like to not have to go to work every day.
Take a look at these 10 ways working remotely may change your life, then go obtain that wonderful remote job you've always wanted!
1. Your workplace can be anything you want it to be.
If you work remotely, you'll most likely do it from home. But that doesn't mean you have to cram a bulky desk, a massive monitor, and an unsightly rolling chair into a corner of your living room. Your office can be placed wherever you want in your life. I've heard of a remote worker who converts part of her bedroom closet into a "hidden" office so she can simply shut her work away at the end of the day (all those health benefits for no investment!) and another who converts part of her kitchen breakfast bar into a standing desk (all those health benefits for no investment!).
2. Your office may be wherever you want it to be—and I mean anywhere!
You're also not bound by your residence. That doesn't imply the coffee shop around the corner will be your only option: You can work while traveling (passengers only in the car, please! ), enjoying the great outdoors (thanks to long laptop battery life and phone tethering), or even listening to your favorite band at a live concert (a tried and true location of a remote customer service manager I know who is a die-hard country music fan).
3. You'll be able to save money
When you don't have to pay for transportation, you'll see an immediate change in your bank account. However, you'll save money in other areas as well. There will be no need to force yourself into a suit and polished shoes if that isn't your style—no more keeping separate outfits for work and the rest of your life! You can also save money on meals because if you work from home, you can easily prepare your own lunch and coffee.
4. You have complete control over your schedule.
Many tasks that can now be done remotely can also be done on a flexible timetable. If you're a web developer or content creator, for example, you can most likely code or write whenever it's convenient for you as long as you make your deadlines. So, if you're a night owl, rejoice! You can still work eight hours if you don't start at 8 a.m.
Even if you do need to work particular hours, you'll almost certainly have some downtime—time that you may spend whatever you want! Even if you only have 10 minutes, you can do something you couldn't in a regular office: bust out some samba dances, play a few melodies on your guitar, or take a rejuvenating power nap. You'll undoubtedly feel more energized than if you spent 10 minutes at your desk scrolling through Facebook.
