Optimal management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) begins with accurate diagnosis and ongoing, appropriate assessment of disease severity. The burden of COPD, and its associated morbidity and mortality, are not always recognized, and underdiagnosis remains prevalent. A personalized, evidence-based approach to the management of patients with COPD, including the selection of treatment based on various factors such as patient symptomatology, comorbidities, exacerbation risk, choice of inhalation device, and phenotypic characteristics, can help healthcare providers in guiding their patients down a path to successful treatment. Proper technique and adherence, as well as involving the patient in the creation of a COPD action plan and goal setting, so they may better manage COPD in their everyday life, are also key elements in a patient’s journey with COPD. In this activity, our expert panel explores the use of evidence-based guidelines in diagnosing patients and the therapeutic role of eosinophils. In addition, the panel discusses the creation of treatment plans, proper inhaler technique, and the importance of adherence for patients with COPD. Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: Employ evidence-based guidelines to accurately diagnose and monitor patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Discuss the potential role of eosinophils in selecting maintenance therapy for patients with COPD, Create maintenance treatment plans for patients with COPD, based on factors including efficacy, safety, patient symptomatology, comorbidities, and exacerbation risk, Apply strategies to ensure proper inhaler use and encourage goal setting and medication adherence for patients with COPD
