En ti år gammel jente har så vondt inni seg at hun begynner å kutte seg. De voksne orker ikke å forholde seg til det, så de snur seg vekk. Selvskadingen tiltar i styrke, jenta blir suicidal og går gjennom en rekke innleggelser, uten å få nevneverdig hjelp. Hun bestemmer seg for å studere medisin; – som psykiater vil hun virkelig kunne hjelpe andre som går gjennom det samme. Hun sitter tross alt med en unik spisskompetanse.
