Methane, with 23 times the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide, may be on the verge of a major surge. Methane is already responsible for about 30% of global warming. Arctic ice expert Professor Peter Wadhams shares what is being observed in the Arctic, and it doesn’t bode well for climate disruption and sea level rise.

Wadhams is the UK’s most experienced sea ice scientist, with 50 years of research in sea ice and ocean processes in the Arctic and the Antarctic. He is Emeritus Professor of Ocean Physics at Cambridge University (Department of Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics) and the author of over 300 papers on sea ice, icebergs, polar oceans and global climatic change. He discovered the thinning of Arctic ice in 1990, and has published a popular book on climate change and the polar regions called A Farewell to Ice. Having led 55 expeditions to the polar seas, working from ice camps, icebreakers and aircraft, and also having done 6 voyages to the North Pole in Royal Navy submarines, Peter’s experience in this field is unparalleled.

His lifetime of work on polar processes and climate has led him to the conclusion that the climate crisis is far more urgent than politicians and even many scientists are prepared to admit, and that the only complete solution is to develop means for removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Scientists Warning Europe presents and promotes science endorsed solutions which will lead to a just transition for our World to a sustainable and equitable future. Learn more, sign up for updates, and support our work at https://www.scientistswarningeurope.org.uk
