In this edition of Radio Islam we are joined by Jinan Chehade and Umar Farooq of the DePaul Muslim Student Association, which goes by the name of UMMA (United Muslims Moving Ahead). Umar served as President last year and Jinan is Vice-President this year. We talk about DePaul UMMA's history, activism, and what bonds them as a group. This interview took place a day before their annual fast-a-thon; each year they pick an organization/effort to support as they accept donations and pledges for fasting UMMA memebers; this year they picked IMAN's (Innercity Muslim Action Network) "Cornerstore Campaign" as the benefeciary of their fundraising. Jinan and Umar also talked about the work of UMMA with another local non-profit Bridging the Gap and its signature program "Lunch PAD" where lunches are prepared and passed out to community members in the South Shore area, along with shoes and clothing. They each reflected on the impact of sustained activism as well as looking at some of the issues they see as pressing concerns in society. Guest- Jinan Chehade; Umar Farooq Host/Producer- Tariq I.
