Having A Sense of Purpose!

Welcome to “Real Life After 70”

This is Real Life After 70 – Episode 02-005

My name is Mike Reynolds. I’m your host for this and each episode.

Do we need a Purpose.

As we journey through life, the idea of having a purpose becomes increasingly important, especially in our later years. For senior citizens, having a sense of purpose can bring about numerous physical, mental, and emotional benefits that contribute to overall well-being and quality of life.

One of the key advantages of having a purpose as we age is improved mental health. Many seniors may face feelings of loneliness, isolation, or a loss of identity after retirement or when their children have grown up and moved out. By engaging in activities or pursuits that give meaning and fulfillment, seniors can combat these negative emotions and maintaincognitive function.

Having a purpose also provides seniors with a sense of structure and routine in their daily lives. Whether it's volunteering at a local organization, joining a book club, or pursuing a new hobby, having something to look forward to each day can give individuals a reason to get out of bed in the morning and stay active and engaged.

Furthermore, having a purpose has been linked to increased physical health and longevity. Studies have shown that seniors who feel a sense of purpose tend to take better care of themselves, adopting healthier habits such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and regular medical check-ups. This, in turn, can lead to a reduced risk of chronic diseases and a higherquality of life in their later years.

Another benefit of having a purpose as a senior is the opportunity to connect with others and build a sense of community. Whether through volunteering, participating in group activities, or pursuing shared interests, seniors can form meaningful relationships that provide support, companionship, and a sense of belonging.

Having a purpose can also lead to a renewed sense of vitality and passion for life. It's never too late to discover new interests, learn new skills, or pursue unfulfilled dreams. By embracing new challenges and opportunities, seniors can experience a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm that can greatly enhance their overall well-being.

In conclusion, the benefits of having a purpose as we age are manifold. From improved mental health and physical well-being to enhanced social connections and personal fulfillment, having a sense of purpose can greatly enrich the lives of senior citizens. So, whether it's through volunteering, pursuing a lifelong passion, or simply setting new goals, finding purpose in our later years is essential for a happy, healthy, and meaningful life.

I would love to hear from you about some of the things you would like to discuss.

One of my goals is to take each “ordinary” day and make it EXTRAORDINARY.
