Episode 036: Let's face it. Although we talk about wall hangers often, the trips to the taxidermist are actually few and far between. A case can be made that every buck harvested is a trophy. However, I think you will agree that not every buck taken will be displayed as a shoulder mount. It is not practical or financially feasible to do this. So what should we do with the antlers?

Personally, after a successful hunt, I am usually worn out. It is a pleasant kind of exhaustion, but I am still often running on fumes. The thought of spending half a day getting my deer head down to "bare bones" , as it were, is daunting to say the least. So I usually put the head in the deep freeze and live to fight another day.

When the time comes to tackle the project, I employ the slow and steady method. I simply dig a hole, and bury the skull in the ground. Dirt is filled in around it, leaving only the antlers exposed. I then put an old plastic tote around it and put some weight on top of it to keep it in place. This keeps dogs and other critters from digging it up and running off with it. The next step takes a year! I wait a year and dig it up. Thats it - mother nature takes care of the rest. The skull emerges completely picked clean and ready for the next phase.

I found myself stalled out at this phase. I have 2 racks from last year that are in this bare bones condition along with a nice 10 point set that I found while mushroom hunting. To get some help with getting these ready for final display, I reached out to Lindsay Persico. I had seen pictures of some of her skull mounts on Twitter, and they were stunning. She was kind enough to chat with me about her step by step skull mounting process.
