Celine interviews Professor Klaus Neumann, about changing attitudes and policies to asylum seekers in Germany in recent years. He talks about immigration policy in Australia since the 1990s, the evolution of mandatory detention, and its precedent in the internment camps of the 1930s and 40s. We hear about the Seebrücke ("Sea Bridge") protest movement, and a new groundswell of support for creating a means of safe passage for asylum seekers into Germany and other countries in the EU. Neumann expresses his hope to see the introduction of the language of human rights into the discourse of refugee activism in Australia, and what he sees as the limitations of "compassion" alone.This interview was recorded in October 2018.
