Am Geomar, dem Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung in Kiel arbeitet Björn Fiedler. Die letzten Monate hat er auf den Kapverdischen Inseln verbracht, um dort das neue Ocean Science Centre Mindelo in Betrieb zu nehmen. Ich habe ihn in Kiel getroffen und gefragt, was rund um die Kapverden geforscht wird.
Dort gibt es eine Zeitserienstation, die den Kohlenstoffkreislauf betrachtet und eine Verankerung auf dem Ozeanboden, unterstützt von autonomen Drohnen. Mit deren Hilfe haben die Forscher – fast zufällig – sauerstoffarme Wirbel entdeckt, die uns einen Ausblick auf den Ozean in 100 Jahren geben können.
