Nach über zehnjähriger Planungs- und dreijähriger Bauphase wurde im November 2017 das Ocean Science Center Mindelo auf den Kapverdischen Inseln eröffnet. Der Chemiker Björn Fiedler vom Kieler GEOMAR ist dessen wissenschaftlicher Koordinator und erzählt nach einem sechsmonatigen Aufenthalt auf den Kapverden, wie und woran dort geforscht wird.
