I know it has been a long time since I have been in a library. How about you? My memories are of big, silent places patrolled by stern librarians. Lots of books, but short on fun.
Wow, thanks to our guest today, Colin Drake, Designer for JRA Architects, those days, thankfully, are gone. In Louisville, KY, libraries are now the in-place to be. They fill with light, people, meetings, renewable energy, great technology and, of course, still some terrific books.
This, to us, was a fascinating interview. Louisville, a great city, is 29th largest in the US, but number one in re-imaging a citywide footprint of hip, fun, interactive, community outreach series of beautiful (use our link to see the pictures) buildings now remodeled into true meccas of learning. As they transformed these buildings, they changed the culture of the city. Their sphere is much greater than the sustainability shadow cast in the sunshine.
Interesting, too, that their dedication to efficiency is against the backdrop of a state and region powered by cheap but dirty coal. Though their investments in efficiency and clean energy have longer return periods, they set a new standard in an old, beautiful city that will Louisville and parts of the south midwest to a cleaner, brighter future.
