In this inspiring presentation, Ana shows how effective treatment can eliminate the symptoms of trauma in children, reducing the ongoing costs to society of managing mental health problems which occur after the exposure to traumatic events. She will share recent discoveries from neuroscience on how traumatic experiences affect the developing mind and interferes with all areas of child development. Her presentation will highlight the use of EMDR, recommended by WHO and used internationally in disaster response to help children and adults recover from the trauma of family and community violence, war and terrorism, abuse and natural disaster. Ana Gomez is an internationally renowned therapist and author who works with children and families in the aftermath of trauma in the US. She has presented in more than 10 countries and trained therapists internationally in disaster response. Eye Movement De-sensitisation and Reprocessing EMDR therapy has been referred to as a ‘penicillin’ for mental health and is one of only two treatments currently recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the treatment of trauma. The other is Cognitive Behavioural therapy. The treatment itself is based upon the body’s natural neural cleansing function, REM sleep, by which the body is believed to process memory and experience, enabling us to assimilate those experiences and progress beyond them. EMDR uses a similar technique and, over the course of only a few sessions, encourages the person to focus on their traumatic memory while at the same time persuading the brain (through rapid eye movements) to facilitate the passing of the trauma through the body’s natural REM process. This helps with the integration and acceptance of the memory, allowing the individual to progress beyond the trauma.
