Here is a way that you can add recommendations to your LinkedIn profile with great success.

LinkedIn Recommendation Steps:
Go to the person LinkedIn profile that you would like to get a recommendation from Go to the … in the upper right hand side Click on the “Request a recommendation” option Select the relationship you had with this person Select the position you held Click Next Fill in the note that shows up with a recommendation that you wrote for yourself - See below for an example Hit send

From here, the person that you requested a recommendation from will get a message on LinkedIn about your recommendation request. All they have to do is accept it and it will show up on your profile.

LinkedIn Recommendation Template:

When you are sending a request for a recommendation, here is a template that you can use to to get a recommendation:

Hello FIRST NAME,

I was hoping that you could help me out. I am trying to add a few recommendations to my LinkedIn profile and I was hoping that you could write one for me.

You can use the following:

Chris helped me/us with (insert what you did) and did a fantastic job.

“He was able to (insert benefit that your provided) which translated into (give some sort of data around your service such as X% increase in productivity or $X reduction in costs).

Thank you Chris for all your help.”

Please feel free to wordsmith this any way you would like.

Regards,

Chris

The reason you want to write the recommendation for the person is that you will have a greater chance that someone will actually do this for you. By writing your own recommendation, you are taking the guesswork away from the person.

Another thing you can add is that you would be more that willing to write a recommendation for that person, but that they should send you a blurb that you can use. The reason you want to do this, that a large portion of these people will probably not take you up on the reciprocal offer as they have to think about what they would write.

LinkedIn Recommendation Tips:

Give recommendations to get recommendations - You can also be proactive and give someone a recommendation and then send a recommendation request.

Make sure to add facts and figures so that people who view your profile can see the results you give and understand what it means for them.

If you don’t see your recommendation request come through, reach out to your connection and ask them to look through their messages to complete the request.

Food for thought:

I want to leave you with one last point.

Lets say that there are 2 identical people on LinkedIn that someone is looking at reaching out to, say to hire or use for some work.

One profile has no recommendations and the other profile have a multitude of recommendations with glowing praise.

Which one do you think will get contacted?
