For my podcast, Intersections Radio, I’ve been doing a three-part series on South Asian comic/graphic/cartoon artists who use their talent and artwork for social justice. This is the last in the series:

Vish Portrait

Vishavjit Singh

Vishavjit Singh is a cartoonist whose alter ego you may know as Sikh Captain America. His origin story began as a dual identity of Engineer and Cartoonist. He drew clever images of Sikh Americans, in a post 9/11 era, living everyday lives. He became a sensation with his poster of Captain America donning a turban and a beard. After the mass shooting at the Sikh Guruwara temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, he agreed to join photographer Fiona Aboud on a costumed photoshoot throughout Manhattan.

Other interview highlights:
**Cartoon workshops: Vishavjit travels across the country, teaching students to superimpose their own identities on superheroes.
**Send a Sikh Note to Trump: For this election year, he’s also started a new campaign called Send A Sikh Note To Trump. He sends daily correspondence to the Republican contender, with messages of wit and compassion, to fight racist language.

For the April 27, 2016 episode of Intersections Radio, Vishavjit Singh joined me on Skype to chat about using his art as social justice. Check out the podcast!

Air date: 4/27/2016 https://sarikadmehta.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/sikhcaptamerica_xray.mp3
