In this episode of the #maketechhuman podcast, host Matt Mira discusses the future of artificial intelligence with Rodney Brooks, founder, chairman and CTO of Rethink Robotics; University of California at Berkeley professor Stuart Russell; and the UK’s Astronomer Royal Sir Martin Rees.

The discussion is particularly timely in light of the two open letters about AI that were signed by science and tech luminaries across the globe. While the first letter acknowledged the promise of AI, it raised the specter of potential future peril, and prescribed that AI research be provably beneficial. The second letter warned against starting a military AI arms race and proposed a ban on “offensive autonomous weapons beyond meaningful human control.” Both letters are based on the writings of Russell, who put AI into historical context: “In thinking about how to explain the significance of the issue, I realized there was a good case to be made that real success in AI would be the biggest event in human history.” Listen in and join the debate…
