Nolan Roberts and I’m delighted to have
him with us
today we’re going to spend the first
segment of our show talking a little bit
about his background how he got into the
business some of his career highlights
and how he’s structured and actually
brought to market a cosmetic line
specifically for men during our second
segment today we’ll talk a little bit
about the brand itself why it’s
different and some of the things that
Nolan did in terms of developing the
product line and then in our third
segment we’ll talk a little bit more
about tips and tricks and the things
that are being used to help men improve
their appearance in our last segment
today we’ll talk about ideas for
holidays so stay with us for our whole

and right now let’s ask Nolan to join us
thanks for being with us Nolan great
thanks for being with us today
oh thank you for having me I am thrilled
so tell us a little bit and our audience
is always intrigued by entrepreneurs and
this is really a new entrepreneurial
endeavor for for you so Nolan tell me
the name of your brand is my company is
called the 11 for men 11 for men and so
tell us a little bit about how did you
start in down the path to becoming a
makeup artist and ultimately developing
your career product line you know that’s
a long story but I’m gonna give you a
short version okay I grew up in musical
theatre and primarily that was my focus
leaving high school and into college and
with you know having the experience of
being a few shows and whatnot I
developed an interest in makeup since we
had to do our makeup okay sparked that
interest of painting however I’ve been
painting and drawing since the age of 9
so it was kind of a different medium for
me and I got more interested in doing
makeup and when I moved back to
California from New York I applied for
but the biggest makeup right at a time
and I was not cosmetics I just you know
see as my way through the doors I can
get in this line that I was really
interested in I couldn’t wear give up my
artistry level as far as makeup is
concerned okay and and so you were doing
makeup as I in the counter basically
format cosmetics yes okay this is during
a time when it was when Matt was you
know right after Lauder bought it and it
was a very big ordeal and so I thought I
kind of thought my experience through
Max and I were could not for years
uh you know becoming a trainer and
becoming a manager of the counter and is
really really like I’m still in love
with that product you don’t love at that
point man but yeah that’s where I kind
of got money
my start and at that time were there
were there’s a lot of men that was
beginning to experience that as a makeup
artist being involved with math you know
at that time it was not as common mm-hmm
you know speaking from my own experience
I only had one other man that worked
behind the counter and I think that’s
why I got hired so easily without much
expect and you know and I wore makeup
something had to tell every day at work
it was endorsed from location so I just
blow unbuttoned it wasn’t as wearing a
lot of makeup yeah
and so the but I understand also from
reading some of your background that
that sort of led into your interest
overall in terms of fitness and health
so in addition to doing makeup you also
got into the fitness industry I did I
got in you know to natural you know
working for max actually working for Mac
I got into the fitness industry
definitely and and I still I still have
a passion for both and that’s where you
know that’s when I figured out and saw a
witness that men are really interested
in taking care of themselves
not just physically but their appearance
you can see that even just in the gym
though uh-huh and so we’re out it was
that sort of where you began connecting
the dots in terms of actually making a
cosmetic brand for men yeah I mean you
know to go give you a little more
backstory I was on a reality show back
in the day and about nine years ago and
it was called blush and it was a makeup
reality show on my time okay and I ended
up winning the competition and with that
platform which wasn’t a big because we
didn’t have that social media you know
like we do now right so
was primarily just TV in my face uh-huh
MySpace oh my gosh does that night date
us or what it didn’t it didn’t have the
impact like I wanted to write if it came
out today I indulge myself into a makeup
line called Nolan Robert of lettuce and
it was primarily a cape beauty line or
color line and so that was my first kind
of experience of having my own cosmetic
line and and but it wasn’t it was too
much competition uh-huh it was a
competitive and there’s nothing that
really stood out apart from the rest and
throughout the years after I you know
realized that there’s a market for the
beauty industry when it comes to men
right and I’ve always had an interest of
creating a makeup line for men but at
that time I didn’t think it would be
appropriate you know I wouldn’t have
done well and so it’s all about timing
and and you know with all that
experience and in a fitness industry and
in cosmetic or free makeup for let’s say
weddings and extend having the groom or
men asking for touch-up a really just
sparked that interest like okay there’s
a need for this mm-hmm you know and I
were makeup myself forever so I’m like
okay uh-huh
you know that’s somewhere from and so as
you begin if you as you look back the
the your own makeup line that was really
for just general market then you then
you sit you shifted it you actually
redid you just take the original Nolan
Roberts cosmetic off the line off the
market and then relaunched it as 11:00
for men yeah I mean that was this is I’m
talking about seven years ago when I had
that cosmetic line okay um and I let
that fizzle out you know I’ve learned a
lot and I made a lot of different
mistakes mm-hmm as you would opening
zero and makeup line right
but you know as you know I say it’s a
whole different brand it’s a whole
different thing right and so when I when
I wanted to do a makeup line I did it I
didn’t necessarily want my name attached
to it as far as that being a primary
name for the company you know I wanted
this to be very chic and simple and
definitely here to towards men so Noah’s
really interesting that you made a
decision not to have your product name
of the brand name be your name because
so many people want to do that tell us a
little bit about your thinking and what
does the brand name 11 mean you know
that’s a very good crescent ID on me 11
is a very personal number for me and I
know I get asked this question quite
often um and you know it’s a lengthy and
serve let me give you a short version um
11 is a very spiritual number it has
carried me through many different
situations throughout my life and the
past couple decades you know in my
previous cosmetic line I had a artwork
for the logo and it was a graffiti star
and in that size has been 11 tonight
because you know when I look up what 11
meant or what you love love or 111 men
which I would see throughout the day
every day for years on many different
ways and it meant it’s you know if you
believe in angels and God and so on and
especially things that the angels are
telling you that you’re on your way your
golden opportunity you know so I always
saw that number in many different ways
not just from the clock or anything
whenever I had questions about things
whether it be relationship love or
financial situations and I would get
these numbers immediately and different
you know ways again so I definitely
believe it was a sign and when making
this men’s line I was playing with
different names and I definitely do not
want my name attached to it and not for
any like particular reason but just I
just
want to bet you sound a little bit more
chic and more friendly to a customer you
know this demographic that means I want
to buy a beauty product and that’s maybe
a little uncomfortable buying a beauty
product it just think they look me up
and so on right just very simple and not
like you know that doesn’t have a face
attached to it uh-huh
and I 11 was the top three names I was
choosing when I was designing the
product and well we manufacture it all
these products and I wanted this and I
wanted that um and the beanie lighting
products and I think II know that oh wow
so I said okay well God thank you I’m
gonna go with it well and that is true
that when those signals show up in our
lives particularly as we’ve put meaning
behind it it really does signal when the
universe is telling us something so that
that’s very exciting that that you’ve
done that now it seems interesting too
though that you have been observant made
shifts along the way as you started your
own line and then decided that it really
there was too crowded or marketplace
tell us what were some of the hardest
parts along the journey no just in terms
of your company I mean what are what’s
been said have you had any like real
hard parts where you’ve that you’ve
learned some great lessons in the in the
process you know I mean everything is a
lesson I was okay
on the development the design but the
market especially but you know I can’t
really say what’s the hardest thing but
for me the lesson I learned is that

there are many people out there that are
still a little you know close minded to
the fact that men are interested in
beauty products so I did have to deal
with and you still
to deal with some of them negative
feedbacks that are pretty hateful with
men wearing makeup and I would you know
it’s hard for me not to reply to those
comments that’s the thing right it’s
hard for me to that I mean I try to give
it the best answer possible but it’s
really sad when you officially with
social media and everyone can say
whatever they want behind a computer
screen you get a lot of negative
feedback for men wearing makeup without
being said there is much more of a
positive feedback that I have been
receiving so that’s great and oh as you
as you look at this journey that you’ve
traversed so far because we launched the
brand in April are there are there any
particular highlights moments that you
really look back and go that was sort of
a break for a moment yeah I bearer has
been the word of mouth I would have to
say um and you know if that shocks me
still to this day like when I was in San
Diego a good friend who’s in the
cosmetic industry they’re higher up who
is a giant in the cosmetic industry knew
my brand so you the name of my brand and
when he talks about a makeup line for
men and she’s like oh you love them for
men so you know those kinds of things
are like an eye opener for me and it’s
really it’s a humble experience when you
when you know that it’s getting out
there mm-hmm and you know that I’m lucky
that I was one of the first people to
kind of develop a me makeup line for men
because it’s going to happen it’s going
to get bigger and bigger you know
they’re going to be many more makeup
lines are going to come out as designed
for men because you know with this
makeup industry being very gender fluid
right now it’s definitely something that
we’re going to see a lot more of right
and so it is the with the way that you
put the brand together is the focus just
the cosmetics like color cosmetics or is
there products that’s also about taking
care of the skin
well Dotson you know that’s a good
question that’s exactly what I wanted I
wanted it to be I wanted something that
will repair protect to protect a man’s
skin you know it’s let’s you know suit
in all honesty it’s makeup makeup it’s
unisex right mm-hmm so a makeshift
makeup however is the ingredients and
we’ll get into that the ingredients that
I really wanted was to help protect the
man’s skin you know when they the
roughness you know a lot of men don’t
primarily take care of their skin like
women do mm-hmm
they don’t moisturize they don’t protect
them the Sun it so there’s a lot of
damaged skin so you know I wanted you
know ingredients that will help you know
help protect a damaged skin or perfect
it if you will so yeah it was it’s not
just about a color you know but it is
there’s other items that are just like
you know mascara eyeliner that’s just
for enhancing your book you know that’s
but but the Foundation’s definitely are
are have skincare in it and we are
working on a skin care product at least
Peaks so I’m excited to launch that
great and so what are some of the things
that you that you’ve loved about this
process as far as putting together your
own company and launching your own
product line I love it I’m a creative
soul from drawing to acting everything
so I love the creative process you know
I really enjoy the creative process
behind it the packaging though you know
the design of it the marketing and I do
most of all my marketing I do all of you
know all of our social media and that
learning social media throughout the
process for a brand is definitely fun
and I’m definitely enjoying that so it’s
all that crew
stuff that I love right right
photoshoots and putting together you
know commercial we have a giant photo
shoot that we did um it is called the
elite men of eleven one of brand men you
know that way and the models that
modeled for me
so anyways we are launching that on the
on eleven eleven so you never remember
11th we’ll be launching a whole series
of campaigns a calendar and so on so
wonderful so in November the 11th okay
so you are going to do that and then
come Christmas we’re going to release
one of our one skincare product
moisturizer that I’m sure every we’re
going to love okay great great
all right so as we wrap up this this
last segment what’s the one thing that
has not been so easy
um you know just as just as good as it
is the marketing and getting yourself
out there and selling and how fun that
is it also is very hard and frustrating
you know this is a very tricky tricky
product it doesn’t it doesn’t appeal to
a wide range of audience right I it’s
challenging that’s the most challenging
is getting it out there and even though
I’m enjoying it at the same time it’s
very challenging and and trying to
market that will you know market in a
way that you’re going to convince men
that makeup is sexy okay all right all
right so we’re going to take a break and

cosmetic for men and we’re talking about
a new brand that just entered the market
in April of 2017 that’s specifically
designed as a color cosmetic for men so
Nolan tell us a little bit about the
brand and why it’s different than other
cosmetic brands because there are other
men’s cosmetics that have already been
around tell us a little bit about what
you’ve created for sure yes there is you
know with I think that um there is or
are many different brands you know even
giant brands that have you know products
for men and you know in the United
States there hasn’t been anything that
launched that specifically a whole
collection of products is just for men
and geared toward men and designed for
men so I you know when creating this
line I definitely had that in mind and
what makes us different and what what I
feel like it makes us different is the
products are designed for you know –
designed to protect a man and protect
the men’s gamut I just said earlier so
that really sets it apart because it was
specifically designed to you know help a
man’s skin you know and like I said it’s
unisex make of its unisex however you
know this makeup has the ingredients to
to you know be texturizer skin the
packaging alone is simple if I wanted
things that are not feminine looking not
shiny right I wanted I wanted I wanted
products that a man’s going to keep in
his bathroom and you don’t really know
what it is you know
would come over you wouldn’t know that’s
the foundation you would think it’s just
some kind of like aftershave or so so
the packaging was definitely a big part
of the design that I wanted it to be
comfortable the logo itself is a Miss a

it mistaken you have a mistake that this

you know what the with the word eleven
in it the names of the products they’re
playful like give us an example okay
let’s say they’re little playful because
I wanted it to be catchy let’s say our
bronzer our bronzer our mineral bronzer
is called man hat okay our eyeliner is
called straight liner okay our mineral
pressed powder is called discreet you
know that word in the gay community is
its well known right right that’s great
yeah and then our concealer is called
cover boys so it’s like you know it’s
playful um and you know and I think this
but what I’ve seen so far you know there
isn’t there hasn’t been anything like
that right and the way that we are
marketing to to the to to men is a very
very sexy and if there’s a chic you know
way and so I can I haven’t seen anything
like that now you mentioned that you
have you you really worked at creating
the actual product and chose ingredients
that we’re going to be specifically
designed for men you mentioned earlier
about retexturizing the skin what kind
of ingredients were key ingredients that
went into the product well you know
research rising meaning like you smooth
out the skin of the skin is a little
rough insurance you know which silicone
like silica it’s going to kind of give
you that softness of its skin you know
there is their skin perfecting trains
there’s anti-aging ingredients like
vitamin C green tea extract caffeine
extract
um you know there is a trixl since image
is improves or visible visibly improves
fine line
there’s brightening serum that in it to
reflect against the skin so when the
light hits the skin it bounces off kind
of diminishing the appearance of fine
lines or big pores so it’s definitely
retexturize and of course we have the
moisturizing agent like hibiscus olive
extracts rich you know promotes
hydration and we have vitamin C you know
again so there are key ingredients that
are going to retexturize the experience
of a man’s skin it’s going to look
softer and it’s not going to look as
rough you know we could you know man we
go to the gym they work they don’t take
Victor they were out in the Sun they
don’t take care of his skin no
moisturizer so this is kind of an
all-in-one product right you know
especially the BB cream which is called
beauty boy you know when you’re when
you’re using it’s a buildable formula
and I really wanted I wanted to minute

natural-looking but then you can build
upon it and be able to have various

I’d have a son you know it’s great for
the day like if you and I put it on
every everyday as a just a moisturizer
because it really and no joke after just
a month of wearing
you know the BB cream I noticed a
difference in my skin texture and it’s a

protects you from the Sun as well as
you’re wearing it and I’m sure for as
you mentioned before because most men

my clientele or men but I have you know
I teach fitness I teach I teach fitness
classes five days a week and women are
primarily my students and of course
their women are going to you know
support me and and and and purchase it
even though this is a makeup line geared
towards men we’re marketing toward men
use creative for men but women are you
still use it and I have such great
feedback me from women saying my skin
looks amazing so it’s a great it’s a
great feeling whew to get the feedback
from both women and women right that’s
it’s it’s definitely is a journey and so
exciting to hear you at this stage I in
that process we’re going to take another

fortune to have Nolan Robert with us who
is a budding entrepreneur launching his
second makeup line in his career in the
marketplace 11 cosmetics for men in
which he has formulated a variety of
different products 11 products
specifically that are designed to help a
cater more towards the growing interest
men have in their appearance and their
overall skincare so Nolan tell us a
little bit about how you went about
selecting the ingredients that we’re
going to be in your products I mean it’s
a long process I’ll give you the short
version um you know I went to different
manufacturers in different labs and a
lot of the love contains samples and you
know different textures and different
color swatches and whatnot and you know
there’s a company that I went to that I
really ups we love and a team of people
just kind of worked with you in
development and what and you know I’m
just be honest I’m not the best skincare
specialist mm-hmm I know what I wanted
and I know what I was needed from my own
experience in my own skin and what I
love and the skincare that I love and
what I wanted is I wanted things that
worked for me
because I want to wear this you know to
be honest I want to wear my stuff I want
to wear my products I want to love it as
well so I went in the process of
development I just kind of listed a
bunch of ingredients that I knew worked
for me throughout the years of
experience and so you know for weeks and
weeks when they’re developing it they
just it’s pretty simple you know you
kind of make him make an Elizabeth what
they can do what they can’t do what’s
going to you know clash what in green
will clash with one another
what will enhance one another and so
that was the kind of process of making
our BB cream and our our full coverage
concealer and I definitely infer that
concealer to say I want it I wanted to
concealers you have a in effect that
bounces light away from the skin so it
fits away wrinkles you know takes away
fine lines or big pores or what-have-you
so they will suggest a product to be in
it that will achieve that so that’s how
they kind of worked right you know it
was like a team effort
it definitely wasn’t just me going like
okay I know what I’m doing here
it does you definitely you definitely
have to find the right team but that’s
really the process that that that you
need to go to is if you’re never going
to find just one you have to you know
really shop around when you when you’re
thinking about developing the brand –
tell us a little bit about what you mean
about a gender-fluid cosmetic brand you
know a gender-fluid fluidity right now
in the cosmetic industry means that
there isn’t any product that is you know
honestly specifically made for a gender
a specific gender it’s we’re all shade
all colors all sexist or racist you know
and that’s what every brand is in that
in that way that’s what you love and
ferment is as well even though though
it’s a title like mislead you I know we
are marketing to men because there is
something like that out there and
there’s a gazillion makeup out there for
hmm however it we are a companies that
is gender-fluid as well like there is no
um you know there’s not a product that
no one needs anybody else at we’re right
we can where anybody can all races all
ages
right that’s what gender fluidity means
in the cosmetic industry it’s getting
like that you know especially with
covergirl releasing you know covergirl
and um the other brands releasing men as
their spokesmodel
right you know and that’s pretty
evolutionary and I was already in
development with this with this line
we’ve got so I was like wow timing is
everything
yeah absolutely Tiny’s everything so
give us a few tips what what are some of
the key things that you would suggest as
for men today in terms of enhancing
their appearance and either with or
without your product you know I skincare
is probably the first thing I tell
everyone and they asked me about my skin

use a finger no rub it in because again
they like simplicity they weren’t a very

broad and dislikes extensions as product

including pretty so I wanted something
really natural that has no fragrance in
it everything is vegan I put my brushes
and said it you know so there it is and
from 100% animal cruelty frame and when
you’re you mentioned before that via

mentioned eyeliner for for a man to be
utilizing an eyeliner what are some of
the tricks that you teach if someone
wanted to you know start very natural
and then have some various different
looks throughout the day um you know
quickly the we have a brown and we have
a black I mean if a person wants to try
Island I always suggest the brown a
brown and our eyeliner is waterproof it
comes in a sponge tip applicator the
very tip but you really want to just
share out that eyeliner you could what I
do for myself to make it look natural is
I line the upper waterline of my of my
list so that way it’s not on the actual
skin so you don’t see an eye lighting
effect you just have a frame that give
that really enhances the eye and I show
that in my tutorials on my website okay
how to do it very simple and very quick
and and when you’re saying the waterline
so below or above the lashes it is the
upper upper lid upper lid yeah upper lid
waterline which is underneath the lashes
okay okay
yeah and normally women will line the
bottom waterline to give you that
dramatic smoky eye but this is in a very
natural way because it’s waterproof it
doesn’t transfer to the bottom line it
looks really good and I teach fitness
and I wear it to class every day okay
yeah and so waterproof and then – um and
I like the idea that you recommend
starting with brown even
somebody is is got very very dark hair
and skin your Brown is AIDS a deep
chocolate brown no it will show up even
with the darkest skin if you’re doing it
as a highlighting effect great but of
course you know black is very very harsh
you know and you know I percent wise we
sell more of our Brown anyways yeah
definitely much more popular that’s

hi it’s Patti Schmucker here at Radio
amb here on healthy life net and as we
wrap up our show today I wanted to take
a moment and talk a little bit of as we
enter the holiday season of some of
interesting ideas and thoughts at this
time of the year you know many of us
spend a tremendous amount of money and
it’s nice to sort of step back at the
beginning of the season and really
reflect on what it is that you want to
do you know there is a fine art of
giving gifts and I have had in my own
personal life the extreme experiences of
you know big lavish holidays with lots
of gifts and then others that have been
very very meager because of the changing
times that we’ve gone through in our
lives and it gives me the opportunity to
sort of sit back and say what is that
process and where do I get the greatest
joy I personally love love love giving a
gift but what I love most about giving a
gift is taking the time to think about
it and think about the person I love the
opportunity to be able to make things
for people oftentimes I don’t have the
time to do it or there’s not a talent
that I have in something that somebody’s
interested in but when I can make
something every moment that I’m
constructing that whether it be a
sweater that I’m knitting or a scrapbook
that I’m putting together which are some
of my hobbies every single moment I’m
thinking about that person and it draws
me closer to them this is the same thing
when I’m shopping for a gift I’m
thinking about that person being with
them observing their lives observing the
things that are they’re passionate about
it really it the fine art of gift-giving
is the art of being a witness to
someone’s life
and when I can turn that into something
tangible it doesn’t need to be expensive
in fact oftentimes the things that are
most meaning aren’t meaningful aren’t
expensive but it is in fact an art and
it’s the it’s the the art of witnessing
people’s lives and being able to turn
that observation into something tangible
that says I’m paying attention and I
care about you and that’s really one of
the fine pieces for me of the holiday
season an idea that I wanted to share
this year as well as we go into the
holiday season is that what is called
the reverse advent calendar many of you
may know the custom of an advent
calendar where right after Thanksgiving
there’s a calendar that counts down the
days to Christmas and in the Christian
religion it’s the the Christian
Christmas being the birth of Christ and
it’s a whole celebration around that
various different cultures have
different versions of it but I found one
a couple of years ago that I thought was
really phenomenal and that’s the reverse
advent calendar and that is that
beginning the day after Thanksgiving you
have a basket and every day you put
something into the basket to give away
it could be maybe you decide that you’re
going to do something for a elderly home
and the things that you’re putting in
the basket are things for them to be
more comfortable like slippers or
tissues or mittens or things that you
know some of the older is going to
really enjoy maybe you decide that your
advent calendar your reverse advent
calendar is going to go to a food
shelter a food bank so the things you’re
putting in there is all sorts of staples
of foods and then then on Christmas Eve
then you would donate that and I love
that idea again it’s just a way of being
able to be present in that process and
witnessing what other people need and
there’s no better form of giving than to
do that another great idea that we’ve
done in our family for many years is on
Thanksgiving we draw names and that’s
whether they
our presence or not but your family your
circle and we’ve done this for really
many many years and our family where my
husband and his sister and our our
children have gathered together and on
Thanksgiving whether we’re all together
or not we have our official drawing of
names and it’s not for the adults it’s
all for the the presents that are bought
are for the little kids and the drawing
of names is for the adult so rather than
on this big extravagant thing where
everyone’s having the pressure of
feeling that they’ve got to buy
something we all just draw one name and
we set a limit and it’s so much fun to
be able to come together and see what
everybody got and who got who some years
we’ve been able to keep it secret and
some years we don’t but it’s always
really a lot of fun and the other part
for my family which is part of the gift
giving is the gift receiving which is
when the time comes to open gifts it’s
not a mad dash of tearing open packages
but a thoughtful process in which the
group sits in a circle and one person at
a time we like to go from youngest to
oldest and someone keeps track and we
laugh and joke and some people try and
cut in line because they’re eager to
open their packages but it’s always a
tremendous amount of fun and people love
that this particular year with all of
the things that have happened in our
nation and around the world people so
many people are in harm’s way I’m Puerto
Rican I think you’ve you’ve been
listening to the show you know that we
were very concerned about people in
Puerto Rico still are here we are the
middle part of November and we still
have a tremendous percentage of people
on the island that still don’t have
power so this is a year that you really
have the opportunity to contribute to
something that matters to you and that
will make a difference in the long term
I’m particularly excited this year to be
participating with my
niece and nephew who have actually been
able to raise money and physically go to
Puerto Rico and to provide those gifts
and things that are basic staples that
people need so think about somebody
who’s in need take the opportunity to
make a contribution to those people
because again there’s truly is that joy
of being able to give but if in fact you
