“People are so afraid of not being perfect, and they set the bar up here and then it becomes this death spiral of anxiety. Just own it,” shares Kristy Siefkin, professional communications coach with nearly 20 years of experience as a national TV broadcaster, national spokesperson, corporate trainer and event speaker. Today, Kristy joins host Kiley Peters to talk about how to capture a virtual audience.

The pandemic has altered the way people are expected to communicate. The way you spoke for in person presentations is not necessarily going to transfer over to speaking on camera. The best thing you can do is practice and watch the videos back. Practice by speaking on topics you are passionate about. This exercise does not need to be anything business related, but instead is a way for you to start feeling more comfortable on camera. Next, make sure you are using the right tools to capture the best possible audio and video quality.

On camera spoken communication requires a different skill set from those used in written communication and in person presentations. Allow yourself to be imperfect and make mistakes as you are learning to be comfortable on camera. Learn more tips for how to capture a virtual audience so that you can be sure your message is getting across.

Quotes

  • “Often, it's not even the audience that's criticizing you. You're criticizing yourself, because the way we see ourselves on video and hear ourselves is completely unnatural.” (4:25-4:34 | Kristy)
  • “If you don't practice and you don't watch yourself, you will not become better.” (9:22-9:26 | Kristy)
  • “Get the reps in by talking about not something business related, not worrying about, oh, this has to be a perfect marketing piece for my website. The more you do that, that version of you will start to show up in the professional presentations.” (11:35-11:49 | Kristy)
  • “Learn your content. Know your content and your key messages inside and out and put the script away.” (24:22-24:28 | Kristy)
  • “People are so afraid of not being perfect. And they set the bar up here and then it becomes this death spiral of anxiety. Just own it.” (32:25-32:34 | Kristy)
