We are built to see when things are wrong. Within each of us is the desire to make things right in the world. However, sometimes we fail to see the heart of why things need to be right. It is true that we should want better lives for others. It is true that we should see for security and the most basic - if not more - needs being met in all people. We have within us the drive toward change. However, change is less about us and more about God. The ultimate desire we see the need for change is that God sees the need for change. When that is seen, then we are compelled to change. We realize that something is likely damaged and we must find a way to rebuild it. “Rebuild: Seeing God’s Vision for Life”, is a series taking the story of Nehemiah from the Bible and pointing us again to see what happens when people respond properly to God’s calling for their lives. What does Nehemiah say to the Church?

  • God’s vision overrules “what we’ve always done”.

  • God’s vision will require prayer, confidence, hard work and nerve.

  • God’s vision is never solely about you, but always includes you.

  • God’s vision will have to be revisited often and fearlessly.

What is the report of the ‘Church’ to the Church?

Nehemiah 1:3, NIV 2011 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”

What has caused the walls and gates to be destroyed?

Nehemiah 9:16-17, NIV 2011 But they, our ancestors, became arrogant and stiff-necked, and they did not obey your commands. 17 They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery.

Nehemiah 9:27-31, NIV 2011 28 “But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight. Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion you delivered them time after time.
29 “You warned them in order to turn them back to your law, but they became arrogant and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, of which you said, ‘The person who obeys them will live by them.’ Stubbornly they turned their backs on you, became stiff-necked and refused to listen. 30 For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples”

How have the “wall and gates been destroyed”?

Nehemiah 1:5-7, NIV 2011 “Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. 7 We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.”

  • Outside the walls

    • Jesus is just another face in the crowd.

    • Christianity is just another trail up the mountain.

    • Bible is an ancient text with little relevance or reliability

    • Foundation of the home is cracked.

    • The world is always changing.

  • Inside the walls

    • Fellowship deferred

    • Anemia

    • Stunted Growth

    • Hearts of Stone

    • Distorted View

How should CrossPointe go about helping to rebuild these walls?

Nehemiah 2:17-18a, NIV 2011 “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” 18 I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me.”

Understand what you have! (The Church)

Matthew 5:13-16, NIV 2011 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Use it for it primary purpose. (Prayer)

Nehemiah 1:11, NIV 2011 Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.”

Nehemiah 4:4-5, NIV 2011“Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity. 5 Do not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight, for they have thrown insults in the face of the builders.”

Nehemiah 9:5b-6, NIV 2011 “Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. 6 You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.”

Matthew 6:5-8, NIV 2011 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

Updates (What’s Going On)

Matthew 22:37-40, NIV 2011 “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Matthew 16:13-20, NIV 2011 “When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.”

Matthew 7:24-27, NIV 2011 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
