Wisdom calls to us everywhere, but she’s not the only voice we hear. To both hear and apply wisdom takes a great deal of effort. There are many areas where Wisdom seeks to equip us to have the life God intended and perhaps one of the most forgotten is work. Often we forget that our work is actually part of they way God has built us and when used properly work can truly provide fullness of life. This week, Pastor Butler continues our “Wise” series with “Letting Wisdom Guide Our Work”. Join us Sundays at 9 and 10:30am at CrossPointe. Our work connects us to one another.

Characteristics of our work:

Be honest

Proverbs 22:1, NIV “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

Proverbs 22:8, NIV Whoever sows injustice reaps calamity, and the rod they wield in fury will be broken.

Proverbs 22:11, NIV “One who loves a pure heart and who speaks with grace will have the king for a friend.”

Proverbs 22:16, NIV “One who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and one who gives gifts to the rich—both come to poverty. “

Be practical

Proverbs 22:3, NIV The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.

Proverbs 22:3, New Century Version “The wise see danger ahead and avoid it, but fools keep going and get into trouble.”

Be sensible

Proverbs 22:7, NIV The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.

Proverbs 22: 24-25, NIV 24 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, 25 or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.

Proverbs 22:26-27, NIV 26 Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts; 27 if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18, NLT “14 Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? 16 And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God.”

Be humble

Proverbs 22:2, NIV 2 Rich and poor have this in common: The Lord is the Maker of them all.

Proverbs 22:4, NIV 4 Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.

Matthew 11:28-29, NIV 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Our work celebrates God’s character.

Genesis 1:27-31, NIV 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

Our work continues God’s plan.

Ephesians 3:7-13, NIV 7 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. 8 Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, 9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. 13 I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

Honest “work” questions:

How can I be sure of the “work” God has for me?

How can I be sure I am doing the “work” God has for me?

What happens if the “work” changes or seems to change?
