Manage episode 192213454 series 1448763
This episode is a REALLY special treat. Stacie interviews Jen Roman, Fire Captain at City of Madison, WI Fire Department and teaches EMS and Fire classes at Madison College. She's also the founder of Camp Hero, inspiring girls and women to pursue careers in the protective services.
CampHERO is an exciting experience designed to help girls develop courage, gain confidence and build character while introducing them to the protective services. Girls get to explore their interests and skills through hands-on activities, taught by real Police Officers, Firefighters, EMT/Paramedics and Dispatchers!
CampHERO is open to ANY GIRL entering Kindergarten up to recent 12th grade graduates. Campers train at Madison Area Technical College facilities and other sites in and around Madison, Wisconsin. Girls in grades 4–12 stay overnight and get a chance to experience what it’s like to ‘live like a firefighter’.
CampHERO curriculum was designed by professionals in the protective services with guidance by Girl Scouts, the experts in leadership experiences for girls. The program is safe, hands-on and age appropriate.
Girls need to know that they are smart enough, strong enough, and brave enough to pursue a paid or volunteer career as a police officer, fire fighter, EMT/paramedic or dispatcher. Nationwide, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (2016) 35.7% of EMTs, 14.1% of police and only 3.5% of fire professionals are female, leaving girls with few role-models to inspire and guide. CampHERO is an effort to bridge that gap by helping girls to: discover their abilities and interests, connect with a network of mentors and be inspired to take action in making the world a better place through public service.

Item of the Week
SALES! Stacie has her eye on a quite a few items during this holiday sale! SALE GOOD THROUGH 11/28/17.
Notes from Stacie:
These are a couple of the items I'm most excited about, and that are on my wishlist. I LOVE the sparkly brooch, and just realized mine has a stone missing, so I'm probably going to stock up on 2 of these to make sure I always have one, even if my next one loses a stone. I tried on the navy button-up at the Convention store so that I'd know my sizing and have been meaning to order it. And this "yoga dress" is just really, really cute. That would be the bonus buy for me!
