Welcome to Singapod episode 1 , the podcast that keeps you up-to-date on all the latest news and current events from Singapore. I'm Jenny, your host for today's episode.
Lee Hsien Yang, the younger brother of Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, has said he may never return to Singapore due to an ongoing police investigation against him and his wife, Lee Suet Fern. His sister, Lee Wei Ling, is also reportedly extremely unwell, and Lee Hsien Yang has said he is unlikely to see her again. The investigation relates to possible offenses of lying under oath, with the couple having left Singapore after initially agreeing to attend a police interview. The case relates to the handling of the last will of Lee Kuan Yew, the father of the Lee siblings, who died in 2015.
Lee Hsien Yang wrote that and I quote After what I have been through, I have no confidence whatsoever in the system.
Lee Hsien Yang also repeated allegations he had previously made on the matter, including harassment, surveillance and smear campaigns.
The reason Lee Lee Hsien Yang is under investigation is because he and his wife lied under oath about the will of late prime minister Lee Kwan Yew's over their 38 oxley road family home. The dispute being whether they should demolish the home or not.
Next up, HDB to pilot new hostel-like public rental model for singles.
Singapore's Housing & Development Board (HDB) will pilot a new model for low-income singles to have their own rental rooms in a hostel-like arrangement, with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities.
They achieved this by reusing and modifying a former Anderson junior college hostel. The HDB aims to launch applications for the rooms by the end of 2023 and has partitioned the former Anderson Junior College hostel to create 480 single rooms.
They will also be providing social services for the elderly by integrating it into the building. This is to combat the isolation and to possibly provide help for the elderly who may not be able to take care of themselves.
Tenants will have access to shared laundry and activity rooms. The pilot will run for a year or two before the ministry decides whether to include it in its range of rental housing schemes.
Lastly, Broken English no longer a sign of scams as crooks tap AI bots like ChatGPT
Experts in cyber-security have warned that AI chatbots such as ChatGPT are enabling fraudsters to create phishing messages in near-perfect English. The development coincides with a rise in phishing scams with greater linguistic complexity. Cyber-security firm Norton has identified the use of large language models such as ChatGPT as an emerging threat, noting that the technology is being used to create deepfake content, phishing campaigns and malware. While corporations can use ChatGPT for polished messaging, its polite and calm tone could lull users into a false sense of security when faced with a phishing scam, experts have said.
