Cycling media has consolidated drastically in the last few years, which means more and more quality voices have lost their platforms. It's a bold new world for media in general, and cycling media has not been spared; it's up to writers, editors, and publishers to adapt or die.
On today's episode of the Slow Guy on the Fast Ride podcast, host Dan Cavallari joins Hong Quan, founder of Karmic Bikes and serial entrepreneur, as well as Joe Lindsey, a longtime freelance writer and contributor to Bicycling, Outside, and many other outlets.
The two have opposing views on what the future of media can and should look like, as well as how we arrive at that new future. Quan's notion of democratization of media promises fewer gatekeepers and better content, but Lindsey warns that losses of platforms to amplify those voices means writers, editors, and other content creators are no longer left to do what they do best: create content, specialize in certain areas, and serve consumers.
Give this episode a listen and be sure to let us know what you think the future of cycling media looks like.
