SDP Show # 7 Getting Open Sourced. Open Source has changed the way we develop software’s. Let it be an enterprise level software or just a web content management system like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal or Orchard CMS.
Modern applications are very rarely built from scratch. They are assembled using existing tools, components, libraries and frameworks which are openly available on the web.
Open Sourced software’s and tools help you to make better use of developer time and intelligence so that they can concentrate on writing more business logic code and less of infrastructure code.
Open source with widely used components and frameworks are likely to have fewer bugs than the ones developed in house.
There is a lot of high quality software available on the web for free, which means lower development costs.

SDP Show # 7 Getting Open Sourced
Software production and maintenance is human-intensive work so leveraging open sources software’s, frameworks and tools may make the development process a lot cheaper.
Open source provides enormous opportunities for beginners as well as motivated novice and experienced programmers.
Benefits of Open source:
- See how others would implement a solution that interests you and you can learn a lot by reading other people’s source code.
- You can contribute your own code and ideas to a project on the web.
- You’ll get to meet great people with same passion for programming and these open source friendships can last a lifetime.
- You can get community rewards, benefits and access to official project sites and documentation websites.
Getting started with open source is pretty easy and the best way to do it is to investigate the code by yourself.
Start learning and using open sourced software’s like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and many others.
In order to find more open sourced software’s, components and frameworks head over to github.com and search for projects according to your favourite programming language.
Once you have done searching and finding an interested project according to your requirement, next start learning, using and contributing to that project on GitHub.
And if you were not able to find any projects, then build your own project and share it with the world. If you really want to get involved with projects online, you could offer to help out with the documentation or you could start by volunteering to write test code.
Contributing, helping and fixing open source projects and documentation, finding bugs, suggesting fixes and making friends will make you a better programmer than who is not doing open source.
Now go out there and fix some projects and documentations.
Have fun.
Take Care..
