Hey everybody, this is Dillon Holmes. This is the Solar Energy Podcast from Cambio Energy.

I got a question recently from Colton in Illinois. He is asking about harsh winter conditions and if the solar panels would stand up to that?

The good news is, yes they will. The solar panels manufacturing process takes all of this into consideration, such as hail, heavy snow fall, really cold conditions. In fact, cold weather does pretty well with solar. Assuming, they’re not completely covered by snow and not much sun is getting through. But, there are really durable panels.

We had a really bad hail storm here a few years ago and none of my panels were damaged by the hail, even though a lot of rooftops were replaced, mine included. Insurance paid for us to take all of my panels off the roof, replace the roof and then put the panels back. All the labor involved was part of the insurance claim. But, none of the panels were damaged in any way.

Panels are really durable. If you are in a heavy snowfall area, hopefully your roof has enough of a pitch that if the snow has fallen, it will run off the panels. If that isn’t the case then maybe, you guys know this weather better than I do, you would have some way to get that snow off your panels after it falls, so they will keep producing.

But, heavy snowfall isn’t going to hurt them. If they are racked right on your roof then they can handle the weight of the snow. You should be fine. Talk to people in your area that have solar. If they don’t check out the internet for some more. But, my own comment is that they are going to be just fine, no special equipment necessary.

This is Dillon. Thanks for the questions. Keep them coming in.
