In this episode I am joined by mental health professional Brandon Hardaway as we discuss mental health in the black community. There has long been a stigma in the black community about seeking professional support for mental health. Over the past few years there has been a slight awakening among the culture, but we still have work to do to overcome some misconceptions. Slavery, Jim Crow, and micro aggressions over a 300-400 year period amount to major trauma that gets passed on in our DNA from generation to generation. We must allow ourselves to be vulnerable and let the professionals help us heal. We must practice self care. We can no longer afford to “just deal with it.” Brandon works at OHSU’s Avel Gordly Center in downtown Portland, OR. Most importantly, he has a private practice in the Gresham, OR as well. Brandon is a solid Brotha and I give him the SXSNDLS stamp of approval. You can also read more about him at www.psychologytoday.com - Below is his private practice info.
