Bible Study

Don’t just take our word for it . . . take His! We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon: Ephesians 5:1-21

Sermon Outline

  1. The recent weather has us all looking at the thermometer and adjusting the thermostat.
  2. A follower of Christ is transformed from being a spiritual thermometer into being more of a spiritual thermostat.
  3. God’s own character is our desired temperature setting.
  4. Paul gives us three ways to walk as we seek to influence the surrounding climate rather than merely being reflections of it.

Sermon Application

  • How would you describe the spiritual climate of your community? What evidence do you have for this?
  • Paul describes much of the moral attitude of the Ephesian culture. (Sexual immorality/impurity/covetousness/filthiness/foolish talk/crude joking…) What particular challenges would living in this culture create for the Ephesian believers? Do you ever believe that your walk with Christ is challenged by the prevailing norms of the community in which you live? How so?
  • Whom does Paul exhort us to imitate?(v.1) What do you think of that? In what particular ways can you think of imitating God? In what ways can’t you imitate God?
  • How might knowing you are a child much loved by God affect your motivation for desiring to imitate him?
  • Paul offers three ways to walk. (conduct ours lives) In love.(v2) In light.(8) In wisdom.(15) Does any one stand out in particular for you? Why? Do you see any one as being particularly vital for the current climate what you are called to affect?
  • How might you encourage someone you know who is more of a thermometer than a thermostat?

The outline and application questions are intended for your further reflection and action upon the weekend message. They are also designed to facilitate discussion and accountability within your LifeGroup.
