Russ Perry is a disrupter who overcame addiction to create a multimillion-dollar “flat rate” design company. He took his start-up from zero to over $1M in 16 months.
“By changing that single habit in my life and deciding not to drink, it opened up the world to me in a way that I never thought would be possible.” – Russ Perry
Russ left his corporate job in 2005 and started his own business. It was like a roller coaster ride, yet he did all he could to make it succeed.
Working on his own gave him flexibility and freedom. But making the business profitable proved challenging. Later on, the experiences and skills geared him towards launching the multi-million dollar company called Design Pickle.
Many Years to Zero
Russ did not find it easy to let go of his first business. He already established his identity as the creative entrepreneur. Also, he spent his own money in running it.
“When I quit and closed the business, I had nobody left. I was the last man on the island.” – Russ Perry
From 25 team members and multiple offices, he was left on his own. It was not easy to throw away many years of hard work.
Lessons from the Experience
Looking back, Russ sees two things that caused his first business to fail. One was the flaw of overpromising and underdelivering.
“Every time we would get a client, we would lose a client and have this net gain of zero. And that just made it impossible to scale.” – Russ Perry
