He is a former chair and two-time vice chair of the New York Film Critics Circle, an organization dating back to 1935, and the former host of CBS Radio’s Engage: The Official Star Trek Podcast. He first heard Phish in the summer of 1990, when he asked a friend if he could have a tape of “that weird a cappella version of ‘Free Bird.’"
